Fish smell

We had some haddock on Monday night and put the container in the bin. Now the flat smells of fish as we have an "open plan" kitchen/living area.

I have taken the bin out (first time since we moved here, DP usually does it!) cleaned and I am now baking some bread to cover up the smell.

What else can I do?

Our windows are painted shut by stupid landlady btw!

do something with lemon - aha - put in a bowl and put in microwave for a minute?

Something like that anyway.

Got any spray that takes away odours?

vintageteacups · 09/03/2011 19:03

Perhaps wash out the bin? If you've emptied it, I don't see why it would still smell other than it having 'scented' the bin.

Plastic absorbs smells doesn't it?

Is it a modern flat? we lived in an older house and frequently smelt fishy smells - dfil came to visit (he's a retired electrician) and immediately started 'sniffing about' turned out a plug was overloaded and the smell was an old 'bakelite' type plug socket.

vintageteacups · 09/03/2011 19:11

Didn't OP imply she had been cooking fish?

nickschick · 09/03/2011 19:14

Yes but so had we and thought it was the reason .....do I confuse you? I confuse myself too Grin.

vintageteacups · 09/03/2011 19:17

Oh I see - you mean you cooked fish so thought it was that but it was actually the plug Wink

nickschick · 10/03/2011 07:42

yeah lol told you im confusing ......

Nickschick is right to raise her concern. I noticed a strong fish smell at work a few years ago. After sniffing around I pulled out the plug to the kettle and the live pin had corroded. Electrician told us it could have caused a fire if I hadn't discovered it when I did. It was an office so no reason to smell of fish! HannahHack, just worth double checking every socket - after all your landlady has painted the windows shut so health and safety don't appear high on her agenda.

See its true Its not just me with fishy plug sockets Grin.

I had the same problem and finally just put the bin liner out - half-full. I just couldn't stand the fishy smell any longer. Unfortunately the bin lid has broken and won't stay down and so the kitchen is noticably smellier than normal!

Light some candles!

beautyspot · 15/03/2011 02:42

Leave a saucer of vinegar out overnight and it absorbs most of the smell.
