Where do you keep your vacuum cleaner, if not under the stairs?

I cleared out the cupboard under the stairs last week to turn it into a cubbyhouse. Have found places for everything except the vacuum. Am somewhat at a loss.

In the bathroom. (Downstairs bathroom)

Get one of those awful mouse-shaped covers and stand it in the lounge Grin

Funnily enough this has been a major annoyance to us for years - as we used to keep the hoover under the stairs. But then we couldn never get down to our tiny cellar, get coats or anything else for that matter as always climbing over the hoover, ironing-board etc. So, having just converted our attic space I had a cupboard specially built for all the hoover, iron and ironing board! We still have the mop and bucket under the stairs and a suitcase seems to have also appeared there too - but I'm sure it will make a huge difference!?!

NormanTheForeman · 09/03/2011 10:43

We keep ours in the corner of the utility room.

bibbitybobbityhat · 09/03/2011 10:48

We keep ours in the cellar but when we have our kitchen done this year I am going to have a big utility cupboard included for hoover, iron, ironing board, mop and bucket etc, as its a pita and spooky going down to the cellar for them.

haggisaggis · 09/03/2011 10:50

In teh hall cupboard. But we are house hunting at teh moment and one of teh first things I ask is "where do you keep your hoover" as it is amazing how many new houses have little cupboard space. We viewed one that had no (and I mean no) cupboard big enough to keep a hoover or ironing board. (it had no built in wardrobes either and coombed ceilings in the bedrooms so goodness kow where you were meant to put stuff)

AmazingBouncingFerret · 09/03/2011 10:51

A tall cupboard in the utility room.

Bonsoir · 09/03/2011 10:52

In the housemaid's cupboard in my utility room (formerly the maid's office).

Ragwort · 09/03/2011 10:52

Good question - we've recently moved into a modern house with very few cupboards and 'open plan' under the stairs - at the moment vacuum cleaner is in spare bedroom and I expect it will have to stay there Grin.

moonstorm · 09/03/2011 13:54

Plugged in ready to go in the kitchen - more likely to use it then Grin

valiumredhead · 09/03/2011 15:53

Downstairs hoover is kept in the utility room. upstairs one is in the spare bed room.

HappyAsIAm · 09/03/2011 15:56

Utility room, just on the floor. In our previous house, where we didn't ahve a utility room, we kept it in the cupboard under the stairs. As it was an upright cleaner, it was a pain - we used to have the ironing board, stepladder etc in there, and had to move everything to get to something! My friend had a tall cupboard built in her kitchen for hers.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 09/03/2011 22:36

Is a utility room the same thing as a laundry? Where one keeps a washing machine, etc? That is what I am thinking, but it's giong to take some major recupboarding, because it's tiny and crammed with stuff as it is (mostly because my husband will NOT sort out his carpentry/DIy stuff and it washes up everywhere).

I have no hall cupboard. Or hall. Or attic. Or cellar. It's an upright vaccuum.

Dammit, this is going to require a new cupboard. I hope my child appreciates the cubby after all this.

Thanks all.

I'm not sure what a "cubby" is, but does it mean you won't have ANY under stairs storage space? When we get the hall decorated I WILL get the cupboard under the stairs split into 3 different cupboards, all directly accessible from the hall & one of them will be a special cupboard just for the vacuum!
It would look a bit like the second set of pictures on here

Carrotsandcelery · 10/03/2011 11:10

I am seriously jealous of all of you with under stair storage. We have open slatted stairs and an open area under the stairs. It makes the hallway more open and spacious but I would love the extra storage.

bessie those storage ideas look brilliant!
We solved this problem when we got our kitchen refitted by getting a full height cupboard for the ironing board, mop and hoover. Before that they sat out in the utility room, which is tiny and difficult to use anyway without them cluttering it up.
Stupidly, I then bought a new ironing board that is too big to fit in the cupboard so it sits out in the utility again. Blush

peachybums · 10/03/2011 23:30

We dont have under stair storage as we live in a 3 bed bungalow lol. We keep henry in an arkward corner in the hallway which drives me nuts as hes always in the way and people can see him when they go to the bathroom. I love Henry but i wish i had somewhere else to store him :(

RedbinD · 10/03/2011 23:32

In a cupboard in the porch. Not that it comes out that often.

upahill · 10/03/2011 23:37

We used to keep it in a tall cupboard in the kitchen that had the ironing board and iron and laundry stuff in.

Since we've had the kitchen fitted there is no room there now so we have had an office built under the stairs and hall that consists of a dresser, built in computer desk, 5 cupboards and several drawers and a couple of overhead units and a shelf.
We got a cupboard specially designed to fit the hoover in.

The ironing board and iron live upstairs in the spare room now.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 10/03/2011 23:41

Bessie, by 'cubby' I just mean I've turned it into a little hidey place for my daughter; she's got a low bookshelf and a few toys in there, and big soft cushions and some teddies, all hidden with a curtain. It leads off her playroom, which is in the centre of the house (logical at the time, I promise) and I wanted to use it to hide away some of the toys.

Those storage ideas are brilliant, though. I am very into clever storage and good ideas. All the rest of the stuff that was under the stairs I could find better spots for. It's just the vacuum.
