Unisex childrens curtains

I want to make the kids bedroom look nicer, we are in rented, so stuck with the walls which are painted light blue and white. Currently it is just dd's bedroom (aged 3) but hoping that ds will start sleeping well enough to move him in there in the next 6 months - but I guess he isn't going to care about the décor so could be a bit girly. Budget is limited - no idea what curtains cost.

Ideas???

Gingham or stripes would be my choice. Both go with virtually everything.

Sounds nice - anyone got any website recommendations?

The cost of curtains vary depending on the size of the windows and can be expensive the bigger your window is, it depends on what type of fabric you are wanting and the fastenings (pole, tab top etc) aswell.

I make blackout curtains for children and i always advise on black out curtains for children under 8 as they are a life saver in the summer months lol. As suggested above stripes always do ok for unisex curtains or spots work well too :) Ive just made some very hungry catterpillar curtains for someone and they would be lovely for boys and girls, My girls have some farm animal ones which i guess could be unisex also.

Hungry caterpillar sounds fab, i was going to blackout line if possible. I think the window is about 120cm drop by 60cm width [adds measuring curtains to to do list]
I have a sewing machine, so theoretically could make them, but don't know how hard this will be..

[ponders how got to be 31 and never brought a pair of curtains]

Shouldnt be too difficult if you have a machine and your windows dont sound to be too big so probs wont be that expensive even if you buy some made up. If you want to buy curtains then add the lining yourself that might be a cheaper option if you can get hold of it, try ikea for cheaper curtains. Or a curtain maker may give you a quote ;)

DD's room has homemade curtains made from stripey stuff from here www.deckchairstripes.com/index.html. They are lovely. Home made by my mum not me as I am a rubbish seamstress!

I would def try e-bay first - you'll be surprised. As a sewer myself, the whole project adds up and can end up costing stupid money. I was going to make harlequin curtains but relaised it would be hundreds.

I am in the middle of making curtains from a pair of laura ashley curtains that I unpicked and used a strip through instead. I bought very cheap plain fabric for strips above and below. Planning to interline and blackout so the cheap fabric should look good in the end (hopefully). The window is huge so I think its going to cost £100.

As you have said, its a rented property so assume you may not stay that long.

Have a look at Prestigious fabrics, you can pick up end of line some of it is stunning and so sweet. Harlequin also do childrens fabrics which I have seen on e-bay at excellent value.

Curtains For Kids - really good service, excellent curtains, unusual / fun fabric, does black out linings & metal curtain holes (wrong word but describes it) rather than hooks which get snapped when hung on / attempted to be opened by smalls. Can't recommend the nice lady enough.

Birdhouse was the fabric we went for & comes in non-gender related colours but is very fun
