What is the best and safest way to clean all the brown gunge out of bath toys.

DD has loads but they all need a good clean - Whats the best thing to use?

Thanks

We could never get rid of the gunk and were told that the mould could start off allergy problems. So we chucked them out & bought cheap new ones.

If you want to have a go try a white vinegar solution - no nasty chemicals & the smell soon goes.

I'm debating chucking them but I know DD will have a meltdown, shes got her dads temper. Just after a quiet life really.

Thanks Pinkwinged

I used solution of Milton and sort of sucked up the water into the offending toys (they were all squeezy ones like rubber ducks). It seemed to work - let them soak for a while then squirt the gunk out.

Old toothbrush, sink full of hot water and detergent (or, indeed, white vinegar).
Soak and scrub.

Makingchanges · 15/02/2011 15:30

Yep ours are squeezy ones too or ones stuck to the side of the bath - others that have the water straight off them don't seem to be an issue.

Might try the Milton thanks

Thanks Tigana - Don't think the toothbrush will work as they are squeezy toys with the hole in to suck up the water mainly.

Although that might work on the ones that are usually attached to the side of the bath

The ones with a small hole I always threw away. Buy the replacements first, she'll get over it.

peachybums · 15/02/2011 20:14

Chuck them, Thats what i did as i couldnt stand the thought of missing anything and there being and mould still on them :(.

Before you tell her youve binned them say in a jolly voice 'les go ge more bath toys!' Hopefully shell be so excited by her new toys she wont notice the others have gone Confused Good luck

BecauseItoldYouSo · 15/02/2011 20:18

Ah yes the 'duck poo' problem, I know it well.

I have tried everything and nothing seems to work. I think I am going to have to do some discarding as well.

birdbandit · 15/02/2011 20:26

i was wondering the same today! DS has three he is rather attached to. I am trying some of that oxy fizzy stain removing powder solution stuff tonight, i thought that all the fizzing will clean out the gunk, then i could Milton them. I will let you know if it works.

southeastastra · 15/02/2011 20:28

how on earth could the mould start allergies? it's only algae isn't it?

anyway i cut the hole bigger and clean with cotton buds when i'm arsed

RiojaLover75 · 15/02/2011 20:57

After years of, washing, Miltoning, using limescale remover and fretting about the crap that comes out of those various squeezy toys in the bath I HAVE BANNED THEM! The DS's moaned and moaned BUT I stood my ground and now they just have cups instead that can be dishwashed Grin

birdbandit · 16/02/2011 11:41

the oxy stuff worked (as far as i can tell), there is no more gunk coming out and when i hold the toys to the light i can't see anything. I then soaked them in some napisan.

However, I wouldn't give them to a baby. My DS is 2.5 and i have caught him trying to eat a worm/poo before now so I think his immune system can handle a bit of algae.

Honestly next time they are going in the bin, life is too short.

PinkWinged · 16/02/2011 16:52

Sorry southeastastra I should have explained. We have a family history of asthma & excema. I'm allergic to some fungi and mould spores can cause me breathing problems.

Expose can sometimes trigger allergy and I didn't want my daughter to risk having the same allergy as me. Fortunately she hasn't developed any allergies that we are aware!

If you want more info about allergies & fungi/ mould you could look at:

I won't buy squeezy bath toys anymore because they are impossible to clean.

The toys DD does have get shaken dry after every bath & put onto a wire shelf type thing to dry - I wouldn't leave them stuck to the side of the bath.

Makingchanges · 19/02/2011 18:39

Thanks everyone - I decided to let DD pick some new ones when we were out today and then told her that all the squeezy ones had to be thrown away to make way for the new ones and she went upstairs and chose these hereself. No battling with the cleaning.
