cigarette smell on leather furniture

We have been given a nice 2 year old brown leather suite from MIL. (She has gone into a care home - and no it doesnt look old ladyish with doilies on!) just plain brown. She doesn't smoke but my BIL who has stayed there a few weekends clearing the house out does and I cant get the vile smell out. I tried a mix of washing up liquid and a squirt of bleach. fabreze. spray on kitchen anti bacterial cleaner. Still I nearly vomit when I go in our living room!

Any suggestions - I promise I will try every one til the smell goes.

Rub it with fabric conditioner? Do a patch test round the back first of all!

Time may get rid of it, but that's the only thing.
I'm an ex smoker, and though I never smoked in the house, the smell of me rubbed off and some things I have will never not smell of smoke.

Putting other smelly things on is just chemicals and masking it really.

Please muggle don't say I've got to live with it - I am a life long non smoker and my stomach heaves when I go in that room. I'll get the smelliest fabric conditioner and try that - surely it wont have penetrated leather completely?
I wonder if lemon juice would do it?
Ariel bio??
I'm not keen on air fresheners as such as they give me hay fever symptoms.

You don't have to live with it, but I doubt you'll ever get rid of the smell. Smoking stinks, and penetrates everything.

I know, I used to stink!

i think a lot of the things you are mentioning could damage the leather.

white vinegar is fantastic at absorbing/neutralizing smells. however it is acidic so it may damage the leather.

you could try leaving some dishes of white vinegar in the room - this will absorb airborne smells.

if you want to risk using it on the leather itself then i would suggest wiping over a 50:50 solution of white vinegar and water. i would wipe this off and then use a leather feed or saddle soap to minimise any damage to the leather.

tbh it's probaby not the leather that is harbouring the smell, it is more likely to be the layers of upholstery. i'd try leaving dishes of vinegar in the room before putting anything else on the sofa.

Will get white vinegar and try the room thing first - i will have a go at cleaning it if it doesnt work as I feel sick.

Will squirt fabreze under as thats the only upholstry I can get to.

My husband used to smoke heavily in our house and in the night!!! I never noticed it but I bet I stank of smoke but wasnt aware- Toes curl now, I can smell it on other people sometimes and its vile.

cheers for advice Smile

Try googling something like "how do I get smoke smells out of leather furniture".

Over Xmas one of our dear cats wee'd on a leather chair. And when I say wee, I mean there was about half a pint of it, it was vile. I googled for some tips, and then washed the leather seat cover in first soapsuds and then a vinegar and water solution. It smelled like a chip shop for a while but didn't affect the leather and also it's fine now. The cat in question (whichever one it was, I haven't identified the culprit) hasn't tried to reuse it, so the smell killing must have been good. I'm sure you can get this pong out.
