Room scent

Can't stand air fresheners etc, but sometimes I want to make the living room smell a bit less like whatever I've been cooking!

I find scented candles don't really work - do those sticks in a bottle do a better job?

Is that the sortof reed things in oil? I was given those for Christmas (code for "you smell" presumably) and they are in our bathroom. I wouldn't like the smell in a kitchen - too synthetic for me. Also it doesn't really take the original ahem "aroma" away, just kindof layers over it.

earwicga · 09/02/2011 17:24

How about jos sticks? Some of them are really nice, they are cheap and the smell stays in for quite a while.

Figgyrolls · 09/02/2011 17:30

If you have wads of dosh to spend then I highly recommend white company ones, we got given one and it is delish - the fresh ginger - in fact we then bought a top up for it (you can get these with lids on etc etc) and to make it last longer we only put a small amount in at a time so it eeks it out a bit. Be warned though they are quite expensive (the nice ones that don't smell too synthetic) but I think you can get them from somewhere like tkmaxx too for less.

I use one of those china ring things that you put on top of a table lamp bulb and dose with essential oils. When the lamp is on fragrance is lovely. I'm using lemon oil at the moment. I changed to this method as I find that some of the air fresheners are overpowering and made me feel ill. I don't have this problem with essential oils. Smile

I use yankee candle tartlets, cost as little as 99p each and last for ages. I use mine with one of their burners and they pop out when set so you can mix and match and dont have to keep same one in all the time. Smell better than candles as theres no wick to burn. When lit in the living room with door open they scent the livingroom, hallway and DDs bedroom all in one go without being too strong.

My faves are cherry, baby powder (nice for bathroom) or sparkling lemon (nice for the kitchen). Be warned tho the 'foody' ones make you feel hungry lol

I once heard that putting a vanilla pod in the oven gives a really lovely smell. This was recommended for when you are trying to sell your home!

I love smelly candles, the sticks in scent etc - but other half absolutely hates the smell of these things. Personally, I think it's a much nicer smell than garlic, onions etc!!!

HollyBollyBooBoo · 09/02/2011 21:11

I put pure vanilla essence with a bit of water in my brass light ring the other day and gave a gorgeous scent, even DH noticed when he came home.

CointreauVersial · 09/02/2011 21:16

I like the reed air fresheners (sticks in a jar), but they vary massively in terms of quality/price/longevity.

TKMaxx do some really good ones, but I bought one from Homebase that was gone in a couple of weeks, but it smelt like cat wee so I wasn't too disappointed!

shodatin · 09/02/2011 21:35

I open the windows first, then find any candle will clear bad smells, altho I have joss sticks for mood.

CeliaFate · 10/02/2011 12:03

Open the windows for 10 minutes. Then soak a clean dish cloth in warm water with biological washing liquid. Wring out just enough to stop it dripping then put it on a warm radiator. Smells lovely and is cheap!

noddyholder · 10/02/2011 12:09

Agree with celia a flannel soaked in either ariel or persil bio and put over the rads

BelieveInLife · 10/02/2011 12:20

Oil burner or lily flame candles.

BertieBotts · 10/02/2011 12:54

Have you tried those cooks candles which are supposed to neutralise cooking smells?

berri · 10/02/2011 13:31

Haven't heard of the light ring things, I'll have a google as they sound like a good idea.

I didn't think the reed things would work....they look ok though, better than a dish of pot pourri :o

Will also google the other suggestions, thanks :)

Hurrah!

dinkydoo68 · 12/02/2011 16:29

Glad to see this thread - I get bad sinus problems and so normal air fresheners are a no-no for me - give me headaches and make me feel awful!!

Anyone else have this dilemma?
Would essential oils be ok for me?

CeliaFate · 13/02/2011 16:51

Dinkydoo68 - eucalyptus, peppermint and lavender would be good essential oils for you.

mummyofteens · 13/02/2011 16:55

Need a new washing machine, recommendations please (or ones to avoid!!)
