I went to Aldi last week and my massive weekly shop came to..... £38!! Shock

I feel like I have just discovered buried treasure or something!

We had all our fruit and veg from Aldi and it lasted really well. Still got some apples, grapes and blueberries left that are still fresh.

I bought their chicken fillets, they were great. I bought their version of Muller light and thought they were pretty good too.

Their bread flour is really cheap and makes great bread. Tins of chopped tomatoes were excellent, the cheese was good and there was a big selection to choose from.

I love it. I need to do another shop now though, so the question is should I try Lidl next or quit whilst I'm ahead?

Went for the first time today after reading this thread, and was very impressed - fruit and veg was great. But I couldn't find £1 for the trolley and they don't seem to have baskets so I was carrying all my shopping in my arms and dropped a bottle of virgin olive oil Blush! They were really nice and cleared it up, but I'm still blushing. Wil have to get up courage to go back...

Jakesmum, that's embarrassing, but inevitable at some point if there's no baskets.

Our Lidl is great it is very reasonable and I have always found the food good quality. I brought a mango there for 35p. We also have lidl orange and apple juice, the 100% fruit 1. It is the best juice.....

Aldi is fantastic too.

I haven't got an Aldi here, but have Netto, Lidl and save a fortune getting stuff there. Different shops for different things. Also cleaning stuff is loads cheaper in £ type shops. Don't bother with Wilkinsons any more - some things went up by 20% after xmas.

DaisySteiner · 09/02/2011 19:22

I like Aldi very much and do most of my shopping there now, but their hobnobs are not a patch on McVities Sad

ImFab · 09/02/2011 19:23

I tried Lidl. Once was enough.

We love aldi! The only things i dont really buy from there are minced beef (its actually cheaper at our co-op!), Chilli spice mix, Formula, Crisps (sorry not feeling the love for these they dont have much taste) and body wash as i have a skin complaint so have to use special one. It also cracks me and DP up everytime we see the 'disco biscuits' (sad i know but hey you gotta lighten up the weekly shop somehow)

When we first started going DP hated the fact he couldnt have branded products but now hes actually starting to prefer aldi. He loves there selection of cold meats and salami and i love their cheap yoghurts for the kids and the super 6 39p fruit and veg!

I shop at Lidl quite a lot. Its great for fruit and veg and basic cupboard essentials but I couldn't do a full shop there. The staff in my local store are really friendly and the best thing I find about shopping there is its never very busy (I get quite anxious in crowded places so big supermarkets are nightmarish).

There's a really good indoor market near here too so I'm mangaging to avoid the big supermarkets altogether- and it is working out cheaper because I'm not tempted to buy things I don't need just because they're on offer.

Never shopped at Aldi yet...

When times get a bit precarious I always resort to the local Asian shops to buy my lentils, dried beans, fruit and veg. Affordable, and the fruit and veg is fresh and is so tasty. Also a lot of the stuff I can get in bulk, like rice, again the beans & lentils as well as spices and condiments.

As far as meat goes - this too is cheaper and the local butchers chop it up in front of you. Chicken especially is cheaper, so too is lamb.

The fish is also great and fresh.

Anyway there's another recommendation if you want to try and reduce your bill.

Just wanted to add Aldi nappies are brillant, my daughter was a disposable nappy tester because we used to live near a nappy factory and they always needed babies to try out new products. So I have tried loads of different brands and the quality of Aldi nappies is just as good as pampers. In fact the factories r&d person recommended them, and the factory didn't even make Aldi ones.

vanillamum - wish I'd known that 2 years ago! Great tip though i'll be sure to mention it to my new-mum friends!
