Cleaning the oven - there has to be an easy way?????!!

Currently renting and having been here a couple of months, the oven definitely needs a clean.

What ACTUALLY works?

Any labour saving devices? I am massively impatient and my oven is at floor level so not easy on the knees/back, so any short cuts gratefully received!!

My old oven simply carbonised everything and I vaccum it out from time to time, so I am not very up to date on more traditional oven cleaning methods...

Can I put a bowl of water in there at very high temperature and kind of steam it from within?? Any chance of that working, even if it just eases/simplifies the scrub down with some horrific chemical type product as a second stage?

Oven pride or the Lakeland version called oven mate. Paint gel on oven. Leave for 3 hours. Wipe away the gel and all the burnt on crap comes with it as a nice brown sludge. I say wipe, that part is still a pain in the neck as I don't think there is a way of wiping off a gallon of brown sludge without dripping it all over your floor. It does work though.

Look in the Yellow Pages - I had a bloke come and do mine for £59, looks like new!
If you've only been in your rented place a short time, I'd be inclined to ask your landlord to pay for it.

Itsjustafleshwound · 07/02/2011 18:03

Get a company in to do it - it is so worth it and they have all the pans, cleaner and tools to make a good job of it.

Again, I would see if the landlord will pay

Anonymousbird · 07/02/2011 18:03

Nah, the damage is all ours!! Previous lady basically didn't use the oven, it was "as new" and unbelievably pristine when we moved in....

Our penchant for crackling, bacon sandwiches and various other things that spray all over the place means that it is definitely our responsibility!!!

Oven pride - is that the one where you put stuff in the bags to "soak"? Think I may have seen an advert for that..

Thanks for the tips.

Yes Oven pride is the one with the bag for the trays. Find StealthPolarBear, she raves about the stuff and has a picture of her oven after using it. It is a very shiny oven Grin

AddictedtoCheese · 07/02/2011 18:11

Oh def pay someone. Ours was truly heinous, only cost £38 to be cleaned and now looks amazing. Never again will I attempt it myself.

OADCB · 07/02/2011 18:13

Oven nu if you want some one to clean it

Or oven pride if you wanna diy

craftynclothy · 07/02/2011 18:20

Definitely Oven Pride (only £2.99 or £3.99 from Wilkos - can't remember which). Worked wonders on our oven that hadn't been cleaned for years Grin

Oven Mate from lakeland

AintMissBeehiving · 07/02/2011 22:16

Oven Pride of course!

PinkElephant73 · 08/02/2011 22:25

I havent tried Oven Pride as am not overly keen on using chemical oven cleaners so I tried using a wallpaper steamer to steam clean my oven and it worked a treat. the steamer softens the grease and you can then scrape it off with a glass scraper.

I soaked the shelves in the bath in a hot solution of soda crystals and then used a brillo pad (the wire wool type) to clean them off.

Get Ovenu in - for the time and the crap you have to buy to do it yourself is most certainly worth it - I havnen't cleaned an pven in years - Mike comes and does it twice a year and everyone always comments on how cleaen the cooker looks!

Marrow · 09/02/2011 12:25

Get Ovenu in - it will look brand new.

cookingfat · 09/02/2011 18:26

pay someone to do it - it'll look as good as new. if you're in leics, google grease buster (£45).

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 09/02/2011 18:28

Agree, get a professional in to do it - I do this three times a year for £35 a time and the cooker and oven look like new, far cleaner than I could ever get them and no nasty smells from the horrible oven cleaning products as the oven insides are dismantled and cleaned by the man in a special van he brings. Life is too short for oven cleanings. Ovenproud if in Berkshire are very good.
