I'm seriously considering taking a sick day from work and spending it sorting my bombsite of a house out...

without DH or DS around to get in the way distract me.

Work full time and this weekend has just vanished with minimal progess made...ugh.

And it's going to take more than a fifteen minute session.

A day's annual leave?

Or could your dh and ds go away overnight? to the Inlaws for example?

madrose · 06/02/2011 18:41

I know exactly what you mean! It's Sunday night and the house is a disgrace and I'm back to work in the morning. I think about doing the same on a regular basis.

TheMonster · 06/02/2011 18:41

I've done that before, tigana.

dearprudence · 06/02/2011 18:43

Well now you've posted this online, it would be madness to actually do it. You never know who has recognised you on here.

I'd ask for an unplanned day of annual leave.

compo · 06/02/2011 18:45

do it tonight?

sorry to sound cats bum mouth, po faced etc but

you're lucky to have a job

in today's economic climate

there's plenty of people who'd want it if you decide to quit in order to clean Grin

unfitmother · 06/02/2011 18:45

FFS Angry

shinyshoes · 06/02/2011 18:45

do it !

bibbitybobbityhat · 06/02/2011 18:47

Don't do it!

You know perfectly well you'd spend the entire day on Mumsnet.

And, btw, where will your dh and ds be while you are doing all this slavery?

tigana · 06/02/2011 18:47

I don't have any annual leave left...or obv I'd use that.

It's just so grim standing in the midst of a midden, and knowing it's going to stay that way....

(just to reassure those fearful for my eternal soul - I am painfully conscientious...to my detriment usually...so a sickie is, realistically, very unlikely.)

Ask for a day's unpaid leave - they can only say no.

MollieO · 06/02/2011 18:49

I was made redundant last week. I have lots of time to tidy my house whilst I worry about paying the bills and finding another job. Hmm

tigana · 06/02/2011 18:57

Wasn't meant to be an anti-employment statement, more a wail about there not being enough time in a day.

Sorry if I have genuinely upset anyone.
Going to iron now...

blackletterday · 06/02/2011 19:26

I've done it before, I find it impossible to really clean with everyone under my feet. Think the Angry ffs was uncalled for.

compo · 06/02/2011 19:56

Ach don't worry, moan away

BoffinMum · 07/02/2011 13:08

I have a dream. In an ideal world women and men would get paid domestic leave on top of annual leave, scientifically calculated to take into account a number of domestic variables, eg stability of housing tenure, number of dependent relatives, crapness of local utilities suppliers, etc. Wouldn't that be fantastic???

gingeroots · 08/02/2011 12:26

Oh Tigana - did you do it ?
Hope you did .
Is your name from the Guy Gavriel Kay book of same name ?
I've recently discovered him and am in love !

northerngirl41 · 08/02/2011 20:43

Well in France you get 10 "mental health days" which you use on a last-minute basis, like people do with duvet days. It's generally accepted that you'll use these to do all the tasks that you don't get round to doing on a daily basis like going to the bank, taking stuff to be dry cleaned, spending a day at the spa, etc. It's a good plan in theory.

However, having had flexible duvet days in the past, what happened in practice was that you felt so guilty for taking the time off you never actually took the time as there was always a meeting you needed to go to or a mad rush with something you were doing.

hpsaucy · 08/02/2011 20:50

I want to do the same. I dont get paid for sick, so not costing my employer sooo is it Ok??

northerngirl41 · 08/02/2011 21:23

No it is being unreasonable to take a sick day to tidy your house, even if you don't get paid for it because it affects other people who then need to cover for you.

StealthPolarBear · 08/02/2011 21:25

you get a mental health day to go to the bank, do dry cleaning or go to a spa?? These are holidays then!

tigana · 08/02/2011 21:27

I didn't.

No one would have to cover for me if I had a day off, my job is covered by me and me alone, so I would just have to work harder the other 4 days. I am not that selfish.

My house is still a tip.

SixtyFootDoll · 08/02/2011 21:37

CAn you pay for a cleaner to come in and do a one off?

northerngirl41 · 08/02/2011 22:48

Stealthpolarbear The french have a somewhat enlightened view of hairdressers appointments - they see them as essential maintenance in order to preserve your sanity and be a productive worker. Can't say I disagree!!

gaelicsheep · 08/02/2011 22:51

Never use up your leave so soon before the end of the leave year! You never know when you're going to need it.

I do sympathise btw, but you know you can't take a sick day don't you, really?

FrottageCod · 08/02/2011 23:11

I often dream of taking a day off with no one else here so that I can clean without the same distractions as OP. The funny thing is, that when I am off on holiday, I don't feel the same urge to do stuff, it's only when I know I can't do it, that I want to....hmmm
