Cleaning after a mouse

Uurrrghh!! DH spotted a mouse in our kitchen last night, it has apparently been eating the pasta on DD's homemade pasta robot (thank you Mister Maker). He saw it in the corner of our kitchen where DD has her play kitchen and toy food.

He has put a humane trap down there now and not cleaned up round there yet so as not to scare it away.

My flesh is crawling at the thought of a mouse running all over my kitchen. I don't know where it's been, what it's crawled over. I think I'd better clean all DD's toys/play food that live in that bit of the kitchen, but not sure what cleaning stuff would be best to use that would be non-toxic to DD (she puts everything in her mouth - especially her toy food) and that would kill any nasty mouse diseases?

Am I being OTT (I have OCD so am never sure when my reaction to things is in proportion). Do I need to now disinfect my entire house? I gather mice are incontinent. If it had been weeing in places, would it be obvious or would it not show up once dry?

I KNOW, it's horrible when you find you have a little mouse crawling round your house. They do run everywhere, but mostly round the edges of things from what I remember. You cannot see the wee, but you can see the poo- small black drops, as you would expect. If you look under your kitchen cabinets you will probably be able to see some there as that is usually where they go.

You will probably be best with dettol or something like that- if you rinse afterwards it will be fine for your DD.

Also, pretty much the only guaranteed way to get rid of a mouse is to blockade all holes to stop them getting in. You may catch one but if there is a way in, others may find it. Do you live in a house? Sometimes it is best to block inside holes, sometimes outside, depending on your situation. It is best to get an expert round to advise you- we used the council pest control service who offered great advice and recommended a work man who could help us.

HTH. Good luck.

Thanks. We're in a house. DH has said he will mount an investigation into where it has been living once we've caught it (I'm really hoping he's not going to find a big nest of them - though we're not seeing much in the way of droppings etc around the place (I've not seen any, though DH says he's seen a couple) so I'm hoping for the best!!!
