Jars and what-not for flour etc

soppypreggyloon · 02/02/2011 20:08

After spending age ignoring the mess in my baking cupboard I was pushed into a toon by ds pouring a whole 1kg bag of sugar all over the kitchen floor!!! Shock

So I'm going to get jars etc for all my baking things - you know flour, sugar, oats, desiccated coconut etc etc etc.

What do I need?
What would you recommend?

TIA. :)

Ones Like these. But we buy ours in France - much cheaper

CrispyTheCrisp · 02/02/2011 20:13

Just seen the reviews for the Lakeland ones are crap - i will go check the name of ours and get back to you......

nettie · 02/02/2011 20:13

I've got these from Lakeland. They hold a bag of flour perfectly.

They're not as pretty as jars but easy to store, I find they stack really well.

Rafi · 02/02/2011 20:13

If you can, go have a browse round Ikea. Lots of good options.

The Ikea kiln jars are excellent and come in loads of different sizes.

CatIsSleepy · 02/02/2011 20:15

kilner jars-they are like those lakeland ones. You can get them in Robert Dyas I think.

CrispyTheCrisp · 02/02/2011 20:16

Ours are Le Parfait

Carrotsandcelery · 02/02/2011 20:25

I keep looking for stacking ones that you can scoop out of without hauling all the boxes out of the cupboard - a bit like pic'n'mix but a home version - has anyone seen them - sorry if I have hijacked the thread.

I put white sugars into either tall Lock-and-Lock plastic tubs, and brown sugars into Bonne Maman jamjars. But I never put flours into jars. I don't want to have old flour building up at the bottom as I top up the jar with new flour.

I think Lock-and-Lock do tubs specifically designed to hold a bag of flour. If I had more space in my cupboard I would buy them and put the whole bag in the tub, not decant.

I find wide, shallow tubs without lids very useful for holding small messy things like groups of packets: yeast, seeds, nuts chopped or whole, etc.

Carrotsandcelery: Ikea

Carrotsandcelery · 02/02/2011 20:34

Thanks Pretty - we don't have one up here so it will be a great excuse to escape the MIL house next time we visit - lovely though she is!

soppypreggyloon · 02/02/2011 21:14

Ace! I'm going to ikea tomorrow so was hoping they'd come up trumps! :)

I have loads of the glass Ikea kilner jars in different sizes - I have them filled with flour, sugar, cous cous, quinoa, rice, nuts etc etc. They keep things really fresh and actually look really nice all lined up - they randomly get loads of compliments from visitors. I just write on them with a Sharpie to avoid confusing different types of flour etc. Because they are clear, you can also tell if you're running low on anything.

LoveInAColdClimate · 03/02/2011 08:34

One more thing - to avoid the problem of old flour etc building up at the bottom of the container that PrettyCandles mentions, I just make sure I finish the jar and give it a wash before refilling it, rather than topping it up when half empty.

chocoholic · 03/02/2011 08:35

Agree with those who said the Ikea ones. They are fab and I want more.

soppypreggyloon · 03/02/2011 09:26

Which ikea ones do you have? There's loads online!
I can't find the kiln ones tho nobodysfool. Did you mean a kilner type?

Am quite excited about trip to ikea as I have a list now! :)

The ones I have are a bit like this but bigger and come in lots of sizes.
They were in the market place bit.

Carrotsandcelery · 03/02/2011 10:56

chocoholic how heavy are those jars? I have weakness in my shoulder and my grip but they look lovely jars. Do they take a bit of "humpfing" out of the cupboard or are they ok? (weird question I know - sorry)

LoveInAColdClimate · 03/02/2011 11:25

My Ikea ones are from the SLOM range - like this www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/80065865. They do lots of different shapes and sizes. Love 'em and v cheap.

soppypreggyloon · 03/02/2011 12:36

Oooh thanks! :)
Looks like a kilner style is the way forward. The nesting hormones are strong today- I'm so excited! :)
