Glasses going milky coloured in dishwasher - why?

soppypreggyloon · 31/01/2011 20:45

My glasses are a sort of milky clear now. I don't know why.
Is it the dishwasher? I use a 3 in 1 tablet and salt and rinse aid.
Is it some sort of residue? Can I remove it?
Are they scratched? They are only ikea jobs so not exactly my finest stuff

Can I make them properly clear again????

I'm properly Confused
It's starting to bug me but I don't want to chuck them out either.

Interested in answer as I get the same thing - I think it may be to do with hard water/detergent/salt or something.

I have found 'fairy' tabs to be a bit more gentle. I just buy cheap glasses (£2 for 6 in As*a) and replace them - I find it's usually 18 months or so before they go cloudy.

Is the lid where you put the salt in screwed on really tightly? When mine was loose the glasses were cloudy.

could be hard water residue. I've started putting vinegar in a dish in the washer everyy so often to get rid of this

This happened to my glasses too, it was limescale, I needed to add more salt more often and make sure that it's a good make, the cheap stuff isn't as effective. It's not permanent, it goes, especially if you give them a good soak in vinegar.

HelloMyNameIsHilda · 01/02/2011 16:21

heh - I am getting this too, indeed the whole bottom part of my d-washer was cloudy this last day or two, even though I added more salt last night - I'm worried now it's cause the salt tipped over the bottom while I was pouring it in and a layer was left there while the d/washer ran

is that bad???

Pinched this from a google search:

You can determine the cause of cloudy glassware by soaking a glass in vinegar for 5 minutes. If the cloudiness is removed it is due to hard water deposits; make sure the salt reservoir is topped up. Do not worry about over-filling it.

If the cloudiness is not removed, it is a permanent condition known as etching. In this situation, use less detergent and stop pre-washing.

I used to experience this tumblers, basins etc all went cloudy. I changed to Aldi 5 In One tablets. Eighteen months later replacement glasses/basins showing no signs of damage. Smile

dumbelina - how do I use less detergent? I use tablets. Confused also I don't pre wash I just use the quick cycle as it's more energy efficient.

Vinegar on the shopping list tomorrow then.

Ok so 10 mins in vinegar made no difference once it dried. So that means etching?
Which is due to too much detergent and pre rinsing??

How do I stop it happening when I use tablets ad don't pre wash already?

it could be just that your glasses arent really suited to dishwashing. I find the cheapy ones dont last long.

Seona1973 · 02/02/2011 13:52

p.s. I think the pre-wash relates to rinsing dishes off before putting them into the machine as the detergent needs some dirt to work on

Cloudy dishes

soppypreggyloon · 02/02/2011 13:59

My glasses are ikea so yes cheap.
I don't pre rinse- just bung them in but as we mostly drink water suppose they aren't really filthy.
Any recommendations for decent glasses then?
