NCT Sale selling advice please!

Not strictly Good Housekeeping but thought someone here might be able to help. I'm doing an NCT sale in a fortnight and want to get organised so I can maxmise my takings!

I know they're quite a bun fight and also that most things are sold very cheaply but I can't help thinking some good organisation and presentation could help. I've got a hanging rail for the nicest things but still have huge numbers of trousers, tops and t-shirts and romper suits etc. I was thinking of putting then in smallish boxes by type, age and price but how do I stop it looking like a jumble sale, or am I just deluded?

Any top tips?

Personally I wouldn't sell there because I had to pay £10 for a table then give them 20% of my takings. I ended up not making anything!
But selling there can work for others.
I'd suggest you have a rummage box where everything is 50p and also have pictures of big stuff you are selling (in case you can't take it into the hall)
Don't make "outfits" up, people may not have the same taste as you.
Get there really early to bag a decent table (not one in the middle of the room, get one on the outer wall)
Take lots of change, especially 50ps.
Be prepared to be haggled with! :)

Order all of your items by age and gender. Then it is easy when someone wants eg. 3-6 month old boys stuff. Ask browsers what age they are looking for so you can point them to the right box.

Oh, and iron everything (sorry!).

I think different NCT branches operate differently, certainly most people in my branch seem to do well from running a table. I think it's a flat fee though, not a percentage.

I am selling at one soon for the first time ! I was going to concentrate on clothes but I later realised that the toys are what we need to get rid of mostly. Any ideas on how to price them? What would you pay for any annoying Vtech or a small bag of cloth baby books? Sorry to hiijack thread though it may help others who are selling too

domesticslattern I had already resigned myself to the task of ironing a million tiny things, sigh. Now I just need to unearth the iron...

Apart from the stuff that'll be hanging up, how do you suggest I actually display/store the stuff? I was thinking if I sorted it in 3 month age ranges as you suggest and then by type (eg trousers 3-6 months, etc) I would then end up with lots of small lots which I could put in smallish baskets. Would that work? My original idea had been to just do a few baskets or boxes by price. If I don't do that then I guess I'll have to proce them up individually. Or I suppose I could just say all tops or whatever £1 unless otherwse labelled?

figcake I'd check out the price of some of your stuff on eBay. Clothes are selling for peanuts on there which makes an NCT sale a good bet in terms of not having to photograph, parcel up and post things for the same kind of money you'd make at an NCT sale but I think you may get more for some (but by no means all) toys on eBay. And it might give you some idea on prices. As far as I can remember from when I've bought things probably 20p-50p for books and puzzles and 50p-£2 for most toys
is about right.
It is my understanding that things are sold very cheaply at NCT sales

Thanks Mirth - I have bought some bargains at these in my time - it is so different when you are on the other side of the transaction! I might sell some big things too as I understand that the NCT want their sales to go that way

Don't bother to iron, please save yourself that; the majority of people would put items into the wash before using imx.

TheHouseofMirth · 31/01/2011 19:04

Chatelaine I know they'll re-wash everything but it's a more a matter of presentation, I guess.
