How do you fit in the time to get fit as well?

I really try hard to keep my house in some sort of order (not including the ironing!)
Went for a run on Friday for the frist time in ages but have hip problems so that can't be the only exercise I do? Please lets me how you work part-time, look after the house and kids plus get some time to exercise?
Any tip welcomes.
I know the number one tip is to stop going on the internet but hey!

The shred - its only 20 mins and so can be fitted in anywhere - i tend to do mine between 9 and 10 in the evenng or first thing at the weekends.

purpleknittingmum · 30/01/2011 11:09

What's the shred?

I have always preferred to do my exercise first thing in the morning before breakfast. Used to use exercise videos and now use the wii fit

Very occasionally swim at the weekend

Starbear · 30/01/2011 11:34

Thank you. I really should get up earlier to fit exercise in but I'm soooo lazy Sad Need to buck-up Smile

30 day shred - a MN phenomenon - look for the thread in weightloss Grin

BikeRunSki · 30/01/2011 12:36

DH and I take turns to put DS to bed, and I run on DH's nights.

V rarely go swimming before work after I have dropped of DS at nursery.

BelieveInLife · 30/01/2011 13:10

I get up at 6am and go to the gym for an hour before kids wake up and hubby leaves for work. Tiring but worth it. Days I don't make it I shred.

verysomething · 30/01/2011 16:57

believeinlife seriously??? Wow, you are so disciplined. How long have you been doing that?

yomellamoHelly · 30/01/2011 18:42

Dh and I do shred together once kids are all gone to bed while tea cooks. Quick shower and we're eating. Usually have trouble squeezing in time for a wash so kills 2 birds with one stone. Should add house not quite as clean as would like but think getting fit more important and place isn't minging (just being picky).

bacon · 30/01/2011 21:29

Great but children are up between 6.10 - 6.30 as I would have to get up at 5am!!!!

Also handy if you are married to someone who has a 9-5 job too. Not here!!!!

Hubby usually outside in the yard around 7.30-8am and usually back in and not running back and fro organising kit/plant for next day by 7pm. Also lucky if you have a family baby sitting service but not here especially in working week.

I'm constantly trying to work this one out too. The 'not so local' leisure centre does a creche on the tues 10-12 for £3 in which time I plan to do a LBT and quick swim (prob be dead after this) You could look into this.
Most classes dont run in day time and seemed to be aimed 5pm - 9pm.

I'm also not in bed till late too owing to tea time, tidying, packed lunches and general paperwork for the business so no way could I get out of bed any earlier Im exhausted.

I desperatly need to lose weight and increase my energy level. Its got to be 3 times a week to make a difference.

Could you justify a school wrap around service once a week? Do batch cooking so you serve ready meals without spending all night cooking and washing up.

Actually I'm too tired to think about excercise!

CointreauVersial · 30/01/2011 22:50

I get up at 6.30am and go for a run while dh is still in bed (actually we do alternate mornings). No driving to the gym, getting changed, doesn't eat into the day at all.

BelieveInLife · 31/01/2011 12:34

Yes very seriously. Been doing it since my first was born 18 months ago. Was back in the gym 4 weeks after having him. Usually 5 mornings a week but sometimes as little as 3.

My hubby doesn't have a 9-5 job so early mornings are only chance I get. I would get up at 5am to do it if I had to. Or shred, because you don't even have to leave the house so that would only be a 5.45am get up.

Exercising first thing really sets me up for the day though and nothing works as well for me as exercising before I've even eaten. You burn serious fat this way.

In Summer much easier to build in exercise to your day, ie. long walks with buggy or kids in backpack. I have dogs too so enjoy a run with them in good weather, kills two birds with one stone.

bosch · 31/01/2011 12:46

Mondays I do 1 hour pilates after work at work - meeting room is free that is big enough for 10-12 of us and work have donated the room for free as it were. So good to do something before you get home - by which time I usually can't be bothered to go out again to do exercise.

Wednesdays I work half day and I leave work at lunch, eat sandwich in car and then go for a run before picking up the kids. Hot and sweaty for school run but i don't care.

Fridays some of the mums at the local school go out for a run between 7-8 when dh's are around to babysit and I joined them once but I am going to have to be way fitter before I can do that again. Something to aspire to though.

Saturday I take ds1 to basketball and go for a 40 minute - would otherwise just be driving back and forth across the city.

I saw threads on the shred and looked to buy the dvd during the Great Snow when I wasn't running. Too impatient to wait for (non-existent) internet deliveries (cancelled round here during the snow) I bought a Gillian Michael's exercise dvd at whs instead. Is good to do at home while the dh is putting the kids to bed. Very cardio but also good for flexibility. Dh joined me once, it was a scream watching him!

But my house is a complete state. You can't do it all. Something has to give. C'est la vie!

mamijacacalys · 31/01/2011 21:12

Wii fit
Get up at 6 and do an hour before the kids are up.
Is strangely addictive as the more you do the more games and exercises you unlock. Have lost 7 lbs since start of jan.
We bought a bundle 2 nd hand off eBay so works out cheaper than a years gym membership.

paarrp · 31/01/2011 21:23

shred is the only thing that I have found I can fit in between work/house/children.
dh works a crazy shift pattern so I can't commit to regular classes or the gym.

20 mins of shred fits in great because it means I can do that, shower and get ready in under an hour so great for saving time.

I aim to do it three times a week - any more is a bonus. If dh is on a late shift I can get more exercise in as he can do the school run whilst I fat burn!

flaime · 01/02/2011 18:27

I drop the kids at school, do a quick bit of shopping if we need anything then go straight to the gym or pool each morning. On Gym days I'm back home and showered in time for lunch, on swimming days I'm home in time to do housework before lunch too (but I often end up watching TV and chilling out instead Grin)

bacon we seem to be in the same boat. I need to go downstairs now and sort out the rubbish and recycling, wash the kitchen floor.get a load of washing drying and put another load in! I'm exhausted from a day at work. I have got a bad attitude as I don't want to get up at 6am I would only get 30 mins anyway Sad
Right, the only thing for it stop going on MN and do soemthing else instead!

purpleknittingmum · 01/02/2011 20:27

mamijacacalys, wii fit is very addictive isn't it? When I am at work I tend to do about 30/40 mins when I get up about 6am, when not at work I try and do a bit more

Othersideofthechannel · 01/02/2011 20:28

Once a week I go swimming in my lunch hour. I am lucky the pool is only 5 mins from work and I have the kind of job where I can eat a banana at my desk afterwards.

Get up early once a week but due to early rising invariably have at least one child sitting on the sofa watching me work out. This I can handle, it's when I have children bickering while I am trying to work out that it is stressful. I might be getting fitter but it doesn't have that relaxing effect.

Starbear · 01/02/2011 22:35

otherside This is what my boy does and if I turned on the Wii fit he would say 'Why can't I play on the wii before school' Hmm Work in a really miserable part of town
Could jog to the park and back but I hate the local park and full of dog poo & teenagers hanging around who should be in school. I think I am making excuses here.
purpleknittingmum Do you know how to get two remote controls working? I like playing with Ds but we just can't figure this out we have a ghost number 2 hand or ghost number one hand but can't seem to play together!!! Confused

Othersideofthechannel · 02/02/2011 05:47

We don't have a Wii fit. I use DVDs. And I don't do it on school/work days. I'd have to get up at 5.30am to fit in my DVD workout on a work day!

gorionine · 02/02/2011 05:57

Shred here too. I do it right after the school run when I am still warm. I would like to start back running as well but am still looking fotr a "running buddy". Starbear, maybe if you find someone to run with you maybe it will be less scary to go across your park(safety in numbers)?

Starbear · 03/02/2011 10:14

gorionine You are right I could get a friend from work to go with me in the lunch hour. Now the sun is out it seems like a good idea.
Went to the gym straight after work yesterday heavy backpack to get kit in but that should add to the exercise that I get. Got home for 8.30pm and still watched telly with DH before bed {smile]

I'd say that the main thing is to find something you enjoy. If exercising is a chore then it'll end up falling back to the bottom of the pile.

I go to modern jive dancing one evening a week as it just feels like I'm enjoying myself rather than exercising. I gave in trying to fit anything in during the day!

OverflowingMum · 03/02/2011 19:07

running for me!! It is THE best!
I like others was struggling to fit in time for excercise. I was good at making excuses Blush
Then last July I decided enough was enough I started running. I built up slowly, sort of followed couch to 5K approach...
Now run 3/4 times a week... do 3/4 miles on weekday evenings, and a longer run (currently up to 6 miles...will be 7 this wkend and plan to keep increasing!) at weekends
The best thing about running is I can go anytime. Just get changed and go. No driving anywhere...no being on time for swimming session/gym etc...
DH gets in at different times...often not till around 6pm...then 3 nights of the week various DC have clubs to go to etc... so it is hard to fit in, but with running I can usually fit in 40+ mins somewhere!
I always do evenings though...have tried mornings but I seem to struggle to run in the morning LOL
And it is SUCH a good stress reliever, and I also LOVE the solitude - it is always a very welcome break....what with work, house and 6 DC....it is nice to have 40 mins peace!
