Have needed a new fridge freezer for a while, for various reasons we have separate fridge and freezer units stacked on top of each other, prob not very safe and looks a sight - now fridge isn't keeping cold enough so I am going to get a fridge freezer.
I subscribed to which? and who would have thought that the world of fridge freezers was so complex - I always thought that it was merely a case of looked nice, good size, reliability, but no they cool food at different rates and some have anti-bac coating and some are insulated better than others and some are cheaper to run, then there is the whole to go frost free or not dilemma..Confused

Thoughts, ideas, recommendations, experiences good and bad please Smile

They are all fine except Beko ones.

Look at what you buy - there is no point getting one with a big salad crisper if you don't buy fresh veg etc. And look at door space - some are crap and some are great.

We have a smeg in one kitchen an a Neff in the other. The Neff is better.

Seona1973 · 23/01/2011 20:07

my beko one is fine thank you very much!!

whomovedmychocolate · 23/01/2011 20:13

Ha! Okay, buy Seona's Beko one, because mine was crap. Grin

wonderstuff · 23/01/2011 20:17

Was looking at Beko Confused Haven't looked at any Neff.. Seona which Beko have you got, because it does seem that even within the same brand the difference between models is quite big!

ours has a 3 drawer freezer compartment on the bottom and a fridge about the same size on top - has 2 shelves, 2 salad drawer things and compartments in the fridge door for cheese, milk, etc

Its kind of like this (ours is quite a few years old now so probably a different model)

wonderstuff · 23/01/2011 20:26

Neff has some models that look perfect - but they are all at least twice my budget [no surprised emoticon]

Seona that looks nice (and before finding which? looking nice was my key criteria) off to find out about performance and stuff..

Okay if budget is an issue go for a A rated or AA rated appliance as it uses less electricity (a difference of about £50 a year between the worst offenders and the best). Make sure you measure your space properly, they do come in different sizes. Depth is particularly interesting if you want it inline with cabinets.

Pterosaur · 23/01/2011 20:32

We have ridiculously little choice as we have a space to put it in of a very particular size. Measure up before you even bother to think about what sort you want.

wonderstuff · 23/01/2011 20:37

We have a largeish space atm - but renting and looking around for a new house which adds to the dilemma! We could be where we are for years or we could move in 6 months, just don't know atm.
www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/4757261/art/beko/cda648fs-fridge-freezer-s.html?srcid=9960&Partenaire=pricerunner&CodePromo=ouithis is what I am thinking of at the moment - running cost seems low at £19 a year..

it gets a rating of 4.6 out of 5 over 30 customers on the appliances online shop I linked to earlier.

wonderstuff · 23/01/2011 20:44

Or we could afford this - £60 more (so I'm a new pair of jeans down I guess)
Cools more quickly (who knew different fridges cooled at different rates) and has an open door alarm that will help dh! not sure I'll notice the difference??

our fridge beeps at us if we leave the door open too long.

dikkertjedap · 23/01/2011 21:38

I now have a SMEG, looks wonderful, but quite noisy at times and it took almost a year (under warrantee) to get it right, first the door didn't close properly, if you entered kitchen you saw the fridge light ... (and was 10 degrees inside fridge as a result). Anyway in the end it was sorted after several doors and several seals and lots of frustration dealing with their customer service. Apparently one in three SMEG products have problems ...

Before that we had a brilliant Bosch fridge freezer, was not very expensive, very quiet and very reliable (didn't really fit in new kitchen, but quality wise was way superior).

crazycarol · 23/01/2011 22:43

I bought a Bosch last year and really love it. It gets a good write up in Which too. It is very quiet and at first I didn't believe it was actually on as our old one was so noisy. It was a little more expensive than some of the others. Our other option was a Hotpoint but the sections in the door were poor. We had a Bosch washing machine for 14 years so quite liked the make. However most important factor in decision was what shelves it had, the number, size of salad crisper, door compartments and what may come as a surprise - whether the door seal was replaceable. The door seal was the thing that went in our old fridge and when I wanted to replace it was told that it couldn't be replaced, I needed to get a new door .... at a cost of nearly £160 - in a fridge 10 years old - I could get a new fridge for not much more! The Bosch has a replaceable seal.
