What do you do with the ash?

throw it in the bin

or it's supposed to be good for the garden, or i have chucked it on the drive when it's been icy.

Kendodd · 23/01/2011 15:16

I could put it on the veg patch but don't know if it's good for them.

It's good enough for Monty Don

crazymum53 · 23/01/2011 15:21

The ash is slightly alkaline so needs to be dug into the soil or mixed with compost.

ilovemyhens · 23/01/2011 17:30

Wait 'till it's cooled down then chuck it in the bin. It's too messy and dirty to put onto the garden as the chickens will just throw it everywhere Confused

Anonymousbird · 24/01/2011 12:40

Goes in the compost, though not enormous amounts at any one time.. just gradually....

cruelladepoppins · 25/01/2011 20:20

On the garden - not directly onto plants though. Fruit trees appreciate a top-dressing with it, especialy stone fruit like plums or cherries - don't let it touch the trunk though. I spread it around where I think the roots extend to. Otherwise it just goes on empty veg beds to get watered in by the rain.

Apparently you can also make soap with it ... not that I have ever tried ... Hmm

dikkertjedap · 25/01/2011 23:24

If it is just ash from wood and paper in the garden (very good). But if you have also used coal then you have to let it cool and put it in the bin as it would be very bad for the soil

Once it's properly cold you can put it in compostable recycling, yes you can put some on the garden but just be careful as if you've burned lots of paper (espec magazines) the ink residue can do strange things to your plants.

OsbegaEthewulf · 29/01/2011 16:51

we hoy it on the allotment

peanutbutterkid · 29/01/2011 17:05

Compost bin, we never use coal, and I am increasingly fussy about what type of paper or cardboard we use. I don't like to burn any paper product that is remotely "shiny".
