Which gives more storage - divan with drawers or bedframe?

PogoBaby · 21/01/2011 20:52

Currently have a non-storage divan, since the birth of DD we desperately need more storage so plan to replace it but don't know whether to go for a divan with drawers or bedframe.

Due to the layout in our bedroom we wouldn't be able to open the drawers on one side of the bed so we'd have to go for a divan with one large drawer at the end which would limit the storage in my mind.

A bedframe would give more floor space but DH is worried we would just end up shoving things under there never to be seen again!

Any opinions on which option gives the better storage in peoples experience?

Thanks

I wish I had a bedframe rather than divan. The drawers come off runners easily and if you only have access from one side whats the point?

Makes room look smaller too

there are loads of good underbed boxes with lids

HettyAmaretti · 21/01/2011 20:56

Bedframe with lidded, wheeled boxes.

PogoBaby · 21/01/2011 21:05

Thanks both, will use the wisdom of mumsnet to win the arguement with DH Grin

Yes, the dust is an annoyance.

Do use those vacuum storage bags BTW? They're brilliant for reducing the bulk of the 1000s of items of outgrown baby clothing. Here.

PogoBaby · 21/01/2011 21:55

I suffer from dust blindness {wink] so that doesn't worry me!

Oh, and thanks for the recommendation of the vacuum bags, have read about them but never tried.

Lone voice of dissent - have (just) gone for a divan base for dd's room. We have the same issue about only accessing drawers from one side so have gone for a sliding panel at the end instead. It does only give access to half the depth of the bed, but I think for us it's going to be a more practical arrangement that lets us use that space to the maximum - with a bed frame I had visions of losing things under there forever (the bed is wedged into a nook of the room)

There are also ottoman style beds to consider? Very expensive though.

BendyBob · 23/01/2011 12:05

You can get divans that lift up to access storage.

Just another option if there's not enough room to slide open drawers or boxes from underneath.

ChippingInSmellyCheeseFreak · 23/01/2011 12:06

Bed frame and storage boxes will give you much more storage.... but inviting me over for a good de-clutter will give you even more Grin

BendyBob · 23/01/2011 12:09

Oooh are you good at decluttering Chipping? I wish I was Envy

ChippingInSmellyCheeseFreak · 23/01/2011 12:12

Very good... living in a cluttered environment really isn't good for you - without sounding 'airey fairy' it clutters up your head space too!

BendyBob · 23/01/2011 12:13

It does you're so right! It's just so hard to decide what stays and what goes.

ChippingInSmellyCheeseFreak · 23/01/2011 12:22

Start with 'actual' rubbish.

Make an agreement with yourself not to accumulate any more 'clutter'.

What sort of things are you 'cluttered' with?

What is your storage like?

TheMonster · 23/01/2011 12:27

Bedframe because you squeeze a lot more underneath than you can fit into the drawers.

BendyBob · 23/01/2011 12:33

I manage to clear actual rubbish although magazines etc can pile up but I try to be ruthless about that and blitz.

Storage and space in this house is awful and I moan about it all the time.

Worst places are the kitchen and my dd's room. Although I suspect dd's room is possibly no worse than most 9/12 yr olds. So many bits and bobs it's unrealHmm no matter how much I cajole and yell.

(Sorry Pogo - didn't mean to hijack your thread with my clutterBlush)

ChippingInSmellyCheeseFreak · 23/01/2011 13:04

Don't buy any more magazines until you have thrown out every single one floating around the house (unless they are special interest and are stored properly). If I buy one when I am out having a coffee etc I buy a very cheap one and leave it in the cafe otherwise they just multiply and I never read them at home (MN is far more interesting!).

Why is the kitchen bad?

  • Do you have lots of 'take away' containers?
  • Do you have lots of 'handy but never use' gadgets?
  • Do you have 'other stuff' in there?

Does DD have a reasonable amount of storage? Does she have a lot of stuff she has grown out of? Have you gone through her drawers/wardrobe and removed all the clothes that no longer fit her?

(I'm hoping Pogo will join in Grin)

Ooopsadaisy · 23/01/2011 13:10

Ooooh - hope I haven't done the wrong thing.

We have just ordered a divan with storage after 19 years of a bedstead.

I did get the advice of friends though, who were mainly in favour of a divan.

They all said to test the strength of the drawers as some are cheap and nasty and fall apart easily. We did this and found plenty which were sturdy and easy to manage.

Can't wait for delivery!

DD has divan with brilliant underbed storage which we have always been happy with. It has sliding doors, the full length and width of the bed which if brilliant for all her hobby stuff.

Hellebore1 · 23/01/2011 17:59

My Mum was a great collector of fabric for dressmaking. In the spare room she had what she called an ottoman single bed. Basically it's one where the whole matress lifts up to reveal one single enormous storage area. There was a small shelf type piece that kept the matress in place when it was elevated and arm things that kept it open when necessary. The bedding stayed in place when it was opened too.
I have a bedframe with large wheeled boxes underneath, works ok but as a previous poster said they gather a HUGE amount of dust. Heaving them all out to hoover not only the tops of the boxes but the carpet is at least 3/4 of an hours job, which I regret to say isn't too high on my list of priorities. Hellebore Blush

RustyBear · 23/01/2011 19:07

So- as an interested lurker who has just ordered a new bed frame to replace a divan- can any of you recommend some nice-looking useful underbed storage, preferably with wheels?

Hellebore1 · 23/01/2011 20:01

RustyBear, The ones I have are plastic with sliding lids and are on wheels. They are about 9" deep, I have 6 of them under a kingsize bed - just. I would say that wheels and lids are the two most important features to look for. As I mentioned previously the amount of dust that gathers on the lids is embarassing so the lids are vital for protection. Hellebore 1 Smile

Whoops - been busy all weekend so haven't been able to check back - loads of threads.

BendyBob don't apologise for the hi-jack, Chipping's recommendations have been really helpful.

I must confess to being guilty of hoarding magazines but our biggest issue is clothes and baby stuff storage, just don't have enough room and am not ruthless enough!

On the bed issue practically has had the final vote, want to move our biggest wardrobe from the spare bedroom (will be DD's room shortly) and we couldn't fit a bedframe and it in the room comfortably. Switching to a double not an option as DH is 6'3 and 16stones so need the space Grin

Chipping going to use you suggestions as a starting point to get organised before I go back to work, DH is becoming a SAHD so need the house easy to organise for him!
