Does your porridge explode?

I am a bit fed up of cleaining up the microwave after making porridge. Thing is, I'm sure I've done it without the porridge exploding but can't remember what I did different. I use a plastic bowl with sealed lid but with a breathing hole (also used it without the hole) and have also tried cutting down the cooking time.

Stop half way through and stir, that might help!

That or maybe do it on the hob so you can keep an eye on it?

MakemineaGandT · 20/01/2011 11:22

I make it in a large glass jug and don't cover it - the jug is very big allowing lots of room to bubble up

Kewcumber · 20/01/2011 11:25

make it in a very large bowl with plenty of milk/water.

I do 2 mins, stir, then another 1 min 45 sec (instead of 2). Not sure I could fit a bigger container in the microwave, but maybe glass is the answer?

I used to do it on the hob, but stopped, can't remember why...think it was hard to wash up afterwards?? Which is counterproductive considering I now have to clean the mircrowave out every day.

Make it on the hob. I used to microwave until I got fed up with it exploding.

I use a bowl that is nearly as tall as the microwave exterior. Are you sure you're using using enough milk? Perhaps your wattage is too high have you tried doing it one below the max.

My new microwave is slightly less powereful than my old one and I have no problems now putting it on for 3mins30 and it cooks without even needing stirring and no explosions (unless it dries up)

peachybums · 20/01/2011 18:45

If you cook it too long it explodes! Also stir every min or so, might take longer but less explosions haha :)

I have problems with things exploding but not my porridge. Apple crumbles are my main issue!

I use a pyrex dish which is about twice the size of the amount of porridge I make.

I always put a cup of oats, and just less than 2 cups of water. Then cook in microwave for 4 mins, maybe 4 and a half if it's not quite done. I do find porridge to be a bit unpredictable but this usually works fine.

Good luck!

DomesticDisaster · 20/01/2011 19:56

ooh I meant 2 cups liquid as use one each of water and milk.

GrimmaTheNome · 20/01/2011 19:59

I find it doesn't so much explode as climb the walls of the bowl. So a very tall bowl may help, but I took to doing it for a period I knew to be safe, stirring and then watching it until it started to climb.

whethergirl · 21/01/2011 11:01

Actually I think my microwave is quite high wattage, so will try and put it in for even less time and see if it still cooks. Failing that, will buy a taller container. Failing that, will hob it.

Fortunately, I ran out of milk this morning so couldn't have my normal healthy exploding porridge breakfast, and had two packets of toffee popcorn instead. No mess, no washing up, I recommend it!

Half a cup of porridge & 1 cup of water in a very big glass jug in microwave for 4 mins on high. It hasn't made it out of the jug yet! I stir a bit of cold milk into it before I eat it as I am impatient!
