Corner sofa & house move - WWYD?

OK, so...

I'm desperate for a new sofa and fancy a corner one, but we're also planning a house move. DH wants to wait til the market picks up but that could be years. So do I get my corner sofa and take the chance on it not fitting in a new house?

Do people generally manage to make room for them in new houses, or are there only a few houses they'll fit into? (The one I have my eye on is 2.7m x 2m)

Any thoughts?

We had to get rid of our year old corner sofa when we moved because it wouldn't fit in our new house.

As we weren't going to compromise on the rest of the house the sofa had to go but we couldn't really afford the expense of new sofas to fit the new house. We bought cheapo ones which are now trashed after a couple of years and were a completely false economy.

It's a very big sofa you're looking at and presumably expensive so iiwy I'd be having a good think about how soon you are likely to move and how much of a priority the sofa will be in choosing your new house.

I bought a corner sofa on eBay for £100, the measurements worked out fine, I thought it would be a breeze, unfortunately I hadn't counted on the angle of entry into the lounge and after 2 days of sweating we had to chop down the stair bannisters to get it into the front room. We recently moved house again and had to remove the bannisters to get it out but it fitted into the new house easily. Dp is not so impressed with my eBay bargains anymore Blush

Ha ha ha 4andnotout, I'd forgotten about the struggles we had to get the damn thing in and out of the house too Grin.

My dsb had to have his lounge window removed to get his in - there was no other way it would fit!

Unless you have very easy access to your lounge and no awkward corners I'd think twice, OP Grin.

Thanks for the feedback folks, much as I want the corner number I think wisdom (and the hindsight of others) has to prevail... 2 seaters it is then! Unless I can find a corner one which separates... hmmm...

Ours separates but it still wasn't small enough, there are some like the Argos ones which are several individual blocks, that may be a better option.

mollymax · 21/01/2011 16:30

Our corner sofa separates into 3 pieces, and could be used a 3 separate pieces although does not really look right like that.
Maybe one to look out for though.

I would wait, but give yourself a deadline..if you havent moved in, say 18mths, and at that point it looks unlikely that you will, then think about it again....
I really wanted a garage door but since we will be moving within 18months, I couldnt justify spending £1.4k on it which would equate to £78 per month... IYSWIM...

Good advice ladies, thanks.

Those of you who suggested separates - do they stay together ok? I mean, a toddler wouldn't slip between the seats will they? Are they just pushed together or do they fix together securely?

They sound like a good compromise. Where did you get yours?

Mine has bolts that you have to interlock so fairly secure, mine was an eBay bargain but was originally from dfs :)

mollymax · 22/01/2011 18:47

Ours secure together with a big metal clip underneath, one does occasionally drop off but is not a problem. We do sometimes split it, just to roll the changes.
It came from Homebase five years ago.

Marvellous, thanks people! Smile

If not too late, may I recommend www.nabru.co.uk

We got our corner sofa from there as you can make it exactly the size you want. The quality is excellent and 3 years down the line it is still perfect. The faux leather is easy to keep clean as well!!

It comes in individual parts and can be easily dismantled and put back together again. Also if dimensions of new place won't allow the size you have, then you can ask Nabru to supply bits that can. Our house entrance is very narrow so this worked a treat - we also got a large 2-seater up into the loft!!

The other plus to these sofas is that under each seat cushion you have storage space for all bit and bobs - comes in very handy for those items which you just can't find anywhere to put!
