what are your current ideas?

We had chores like:
Sweeping the kitchen
Folding and putting away laundry (I was in charge of socks from a very young age! Grin)
Taking out the rubbish
Mowing the lawn
Watering the indoor plants
Cleaning up after supper
Making breakfast
Setting the table for any relevant meals

We did have a cleaner though so if you don't, I could imagine a few extra chores like:
washing out the shower/bath or cleaning the basin
Dusting
Vacuuming

oh, and feeding pets. That was a BIG one in our house.

emptying dishwasher/washing the dishes
laying table
clearing table
hoovering + mopping floors
keeping their own rooms tidy
loading washing mashine
folding their own clothes
taking out rubbish
cleaning the loo
cleaning the sinks

We have:
Pets
Table setting
Washing up
Floor sweeping
Mopping (but they actually compete for that one as it involves making a sploshy mess and skidding around with the mop)

We are a family of slobs, though, and it's more a case of Yelling For Nearest Child than a strict rota.

My brother does the strict rota thing, and his kids argue like mini-lawyers about whether being away for tea one evening means you are let off your jobs or should double up later in the week.

Feeding cat, scooping poo out of litter tray
Clearing own crockery/cutlery after meals, loading it into the dishwasher.
Unloading the cutlery from dishwasher.
Helping sort laundry once dried/ironed, put own clothes away.
Help strip and remake beds.
Tidy shoe rack in hall
Help put out the recycling/bring boxes back into house when binmen have been.
Help put away food shopping
Help load/unload car from shopping/daytrips
Clear rubbish eg snack wrappers from car every day.
Vacuum inside of car with handheld vac.
Wipe down leather seats of car with wet cloth and buff,

All for £2 a week each. Age 8.

Have to tidy own bedrooms before 12 on Saturday to get pocket money.

Other chores - 4 kids, one each per day.

Unloading Dishwasher
loading dishwasher
hoovering hall, stairs and landing
sweep downstairs floors (the ones without carpet)
hang up washing
take down washing and take upstairs
empty kitchen bin to outside bin

they can negotiate between themselves, as long as they get done. They get extra money for each day they do a job (30p a day)

so the lazy devils who cant be bothered tidying their room or doing any chores dont get any money, and the ones that do their own and extras even, can be loaded!

So far I have ds1 and dd - empty dishwasher, sweep kitchen floor, change guinea pigs water, hoover and change his bed.
DS2 has change guinea pigs water, sweep kitchen floor and change his bed.

I asked ds1 to do the water this morning and he wouldn't as I wouldn't give him any money for doing it.

I am thinking one or 2 jobs a day for 6 days and then they get pocket money. I am then willing to give them extra for extra jobs.

Cleaning the loo at such a young age? Not here I don't think.

there are some things mine do anyway without getting money too - like peeling veg for meals, making drinks for people, laying the fire (newspaper, kindling - preparing it, not lighting it)
renewing dog food and water

  • just because they will if asked - or with the dog becase they know it needs doing.
They also like cleaning the car on occasion.
silverfrog · 19/01/2011 11:18

my dds are 6 and 3 (dd1 is severely ASD)

they:

put clothes in the laundry basket
help sort out clothes ofr washing (light/dark)
load/unload washing machine/tumble dryer
put clothes away
get clothes ready for the next day
hang up coats/jumpers
get lunchbox ready (dd1)
sort out schoolbag/extras needed (eg swimming kit)
help rinse the bath after using it/put bath toys away
load/unload dishwasher
lay table/clear table
sweep the floor (eg after breakfast sweep up dropped cornflakes)
help with taking the rubbish out

hth

Sometimes mine will do what I ask but other times just will not. I want a set amount of jobs that they are expected to do in return for pocket money as well as some that they will do because they live here too and make most of the mess.
