Good quality mattress suggestions?

DS1 is about to get his first proper size single bed and while I intend to buy a cheap bed frame, I want to get a lovely comfortable mattress for him, but I dpn't know where to start...

We have a memory foam mattress (reylon), which is sooo comfortable, but doesn't seem to be lasting well. I can't afford the earth! but I grew us sleeping on uncomfortable mattresses and they really make a difference, so I vowed I would always get the best mattresses!

Any ideas where to start would be great, although I'll want to try them out in 'real life'!

Thanks

Ours are all from Ikea. We've got the most expensive [proud], DD has the cheapest. She slept with me a couple of nights ago while DH was away and is now complaining about the discomfort she feels on her mattress.
She and I are moving soon so I'll get her a better, softer mattress from Ikea or a foam overlay.

We have a vi-spring for us and it's heaven but soooo expensive. If I were made of money that's what I'd give my ds when he's old enough

All the 'bed' people say that what you put the mattress on is just as important as the mattress. You also need to make sure it's designed to go on the base you are buying as if it's not the right sort it will wear out quicker.

We got our beds from Ikea simply because it was all we could afford when we moved to Switzerland. They sit on a slatted base. I don't know if they are specific sizes unique to Ikea though.

Hypnos.

We had a try of all the high quality mattresses (Vi Spring, Hastens..) when we were changing ours and Hypnos came tops. It is also (comparatively) reasonably priced, and have different ranges (with different prices). Their basic range is very reasonable and very comfortable. They are sold at John Lewis

Chipping in, base is not an issue if you purchase the company's base mattress to go with the top mattress.

Sofa - yeah I know that, but Moonstorm was talking about buying a cheap bed frame and they aren't compatible with some mattresses and make them wear out quicker - mostly to do with the springs getting pushed between the slats rubbing & getting squished I think.

Thank you. A trip to John Lewis is on the cards!

That's interesting about the base... wonder whether a cheaper divan would be ok...

We have divan base for ours and I think it makes it extra comfy, but mattress is designed to be on a divan. I think you just need to make sure the mattress suits the base.
