I'm using own brand dishwasher tablets at the moment but my glasses have a white residue on after washing - which are the best dishwasher tablets to use?

If you live somewhere with well 'ard water like south London, you need rinse aid, salt, and decent tablets.

Lidl ones are pretty good, but 99pStores or Sainsburys Basic leave crap on my dishes all the time, unless I hardly fill the machine.

I do pack my machine well, unlike lots of people who hardly put anything in their dishwasher and then complain there's still dishes hanging about.

I read in Which some time ago that Tesco tablets (the really really cheap ones, in the red white and blue box) were excellent so gave them a go and found them to be very good indeed, against all my expectations! However my Tesco frequently runs out of them, so then I use Aldi 5 In One tablets which are also excellent. That said, I usually keep a bottle of dishwasher liquid for when I have a load of very lightly soiled dishes to wash on 30 degrees, as often the tablets don't disolve on quick wash progs. Im hard up so could i use tesco value ones and would i have to put in salt and rinse aid? Surely that would make it as expensive as buying a cheaper all in one?

Try using powder not tablets. I have read that it washes more effectively (dissolves quicker) and it is better for your machine. Then you can twiddle the rinse aid dispenser to get the dishes clean but with no residue. It's much cheaper too - I use Waitrose or Lidl own brand powder. Salt and rinse aid lasts for ages and value brands seem to work as well as expensive ones.

I'll give that a go, thanks

I had the cloudy glassware problem, and even when I added rinse aid and salt it didnt improve. Then about a month ago, I discovered that the rinse aid compartment actually unscrewed and that I had been putting in only a small amount before this. Now glasses are very sparkly and the cloudiness has gone. I've got a built in hotpoint btw.

Hi oksonowwhat, according to Which the Tesco value jobbies still work out cheaper even allowing for having to buy salt and rinse aid. They are only £1.7? per box. I assume they mean buying own brand salt and rinse aid and not the fancy stuff. Cheers Hellebore!

I have been using either Waitrose tablets or Sainsburys Basic Range Dishwasher tablets as they did very well in a rating in a magazing (Good Housekeeping I think) and they work just as well as the 'branded' ones.

Always use Rinse Aid and Salt though, live in a very hard water area.

Agree Aldi and Lidl also did well in tests.
