Formaldehyde smell from flatpack furniture

I bought a flat pack bookcase for my DD's bedroom and it has quite a distinct pungent formaldehyde smell. I have kept the windows open during the day which has helped a bit, but I am concerned about exposing my DD to potentially toxic fumes. I now know that formaldehyde is used in the manufacturing process for plywood/particleboard furniture. Will the smell get better with time, or should I just return it?
Thanks in advance.
