Are dishwashers any good?

We don't really have room in our kitchen for a dishwasher, but I'm wondering if we should see if we can somehow sqeeze one in as the washing up really seems to be taking up a lot of time and it looks so messy, it's silly but we have 3 children and there just always seems to be so much of it.

Do they really save you any time though, or do you find it takes ages to load and unload, and then half the dishes are dirty anyway. Do you have to rinse everything off first? I really haven't got a clue, never had any experience at all of dishwashers.

What do you think, is it worth losing cupboard space in our tiny kitchen for one.

can i hijack and ask about table top ones?

do they have to be plumbed in? i've looked a number of times at getting one, washing up in teh bane of my life, as is teh constant pile of dishes and glasses in / by the sink.

i can't find any info on how the water gets in and out Hmm

we've got a rented house, no room for a normal one, and being rented i don't think we could fiddle with the plumbing too much.

i love love love my dishwasher we only bought this house in march (no room for even worktop one in old rented house) and it still seems like a massive lovely beautiful time giving novelty i love it to bits!best money we ever spent even more so than my car :)

mousymouse · 07/01/2011 10:30

Pura you can plumb them in, which would be better if possible.
we also rent so cannot put a hole through the worktop to get to the plumbing of the washing mashine.
our solution was to get an adapter thingy that screws onto the normal kitchen tap and if we want to use the maschine we screw the hose on. but unfortunately I have no clue what this adapter thingy is called...

Thanks mousymouse, i'm going to look into it

I [heart] my Miele, the cutlery tray is at the top so more room below and no having to sort cutlery afterwards and it's v quiet.

DisparityCausesInstability · 07/01/2011 13:13

I have a Miele with a cutlery tray and I hated it, I did't have enough height for my tall glasses - ended up getting a cutlery basket and much happier now Grin

I didn't see the point of dishwashers when it was just dh and I - it wasn't until we had a few kids kicking around that I could see the point....and now I love it very much and I would cry buckets if I had to lose it.

ChippingIn · 07/01/2011 14:44

In the old place we had an integrated one with the top cutlery tray and I loved it, I would never, ever, buy one without that again. It wasn't Miele but I can't remember what it was. It's a feature that tends to be on the more expensive machines though. I haven't ever had a dishwasher that was great for tall glasses and if I put them in I tend to lean them over anyway - but whatever you do, a dishwasher wrecks the glasses.

Notcitrus - I will put pans in if they are dishwasher safe and if they fit, but usually it's too full to get everything in so it's easier to handwash one or two pans and put all the other stuff in. I don't put the big heavy frying pan or the wok in though as it just ruins them. I put ordinary, easily replaced, drinking glasses in but rarely wine glasses as it ruins them and it's usually full of cups anyway Grin

hiya
you know what?
i dont like the dishwasher , ok is very comfortable , but when you have the dishes in the machine about for 2 days you open the door and is smell as pig .
disgusting .
and the dishes , glasses ect ,are not coming out as clean as i wash thenm myself.
my mother in law has one , and my sister in law has one , but what i experienced i wouldnt reccommend it if you have bigger children dont even bother to buy it waste of money.

Mummy2Bookie · 08/01/2011 20:37

Yes. Dishwashers are wonderful. I put it on every evening before bed and the dishes are sparkling clean when we get up each morning.

Mummy2Bookie · 08/01/2011 20:39

Nyuszika why would you leave dirty dishes in the dishwasher for two days? They will smell if not washed each day.

Needanewname · 09/01/2011 10:08

was thinking that too mummy2bookie!

Mummy2Bookie · 10/01/2011 16:54

Lol

You're always either looking at the washing up waiting on the side to be done, doing it, or looking at it on the otherside while it drains before you can put it away. While I was waiting for my DDW (yes, that's darling dishwasher) to be plumbed in when we moved, my kitchen was never free from some form of washing up for more than about a minute.

One of the best things about a dishwasher is that you don't have to LOOK at it anymore, clean or dirty!

And if you are worried about it building up to mammouth emptying/putting away sessions, buy a slimline one - big enough for 1 day so no build up. Simples!
