Oven Cleaning for Dummies

My oven is in a sorry state after a lot of Christmas cooking.

Who am I kidding? My oven hasn't been cleaned since about April, and even then my dad did it.

Anyway, I've read a lot of MN threads where people swear by Oven Magic, but I wondered if I could have some top tips for actually how to do it?

I know you put the shelves in the bag, but what about the inside top and sides? What about the inside of the door?

It's an electric fan-assisted oven with a glass door if that makes any difference whatsoever.

Help - I really haven't got a clue what I'm doing.

Its Oven Pride that people usually rave over

You can just smear it on, but for the best results : -basically
Glove up- use proper washing up gloves if you possibly can cos this stuff is TOXIC and will burn your skin.
Get into your messiest trashiest clothes
Put a plastic bag or sheeting on the floor and then several layers of newspaper on top in case any leaks out.
Find an old sponge or jay cloth

Then pour it onto the bottom and smear it everywhere, up the sides, round the back (this is where the long gloves come in handy) and spread it around- pour some onto a sponge or old cloth and splodge it all over the sides.

You might find your oven glass slides out and if it does, fab, if not just smear it all over that too and leave it for 20 mins before you close it up to settle on there.

Then after the required time, grab some old sponges, kitchen roll and cloths and start wiping off. When you have most of it off swap to a nice think cloth with warm mildy soapy water and wash it down.
The newspaper and used kitchen roll can then all be rolled up into the plastic bag and knotted up and dropped in bin and cloths worth saving chucked in washing machine.

And thats it really.
Have fun!!

Think cloth = thick cloth

DreamTeamGirl, I think I love you!

Blush at getting to nearly 35 without knowing how to clean an oven.

And Blush again at getting the name wrong. I thought Oven Magic looked wrong when I wrote it Blush

Thank you so much, will let you know how I get on!!

Yep i basically do what Dream Team Girl does but when i put the racks in the bag i put the glass bit out of the door in with them, comes out super shiney! Maybe a good idea to do that outside though, the bags are tough but i once made a tiny hole in it with the glass, good job i had paper down Shock

Also would recommend using Jay cloths as it 'melts' them lol

peachybums · 04/01/2011 11:54

sorry wouldnt recommend using Jay cloths :s

Also be really careful where you put the bottle whilst in use and afterwards. Once a little bit had leaked out without me realising and I put the bottle on my kitchen work top and now have a scorch mark - it really is powerful stuff!

I just used Oven Pride for the first time last weekend - it's fabulous! In addition to the previous advice, remember to wear a longsleeved top. I wore a t-shirt and got a nasty chemical burn on my elbow when reaching inside the oven !

I used Oven Pride but found it a pain waiting for it all to soak in it. So I now :

remove shelves and put in hot soapy water to soak

Put on rubber gloves and

Spray Mr Muscle foam oven cleaner inside oven and on to inside of door. Close oven.

Use brillo pads to scrub oven shelves whilst oven cleaner works

Wipe out oven

Leave oven open to "air" and then reassemble

Sanesometimes1 · 05/01/2011 22:44

do the same as emo76 cheap value brillo pads from tesco are about 20p I think, also find that doing this job often makes it very easy and quick.

When your oven is nice and clean you can do this providing it doen NOT have the self cleaning coating thingy:

Get some bicarb from the pharmacy (who sell bigger packets cheaper than the baking tubs) and mix some to a paste with water that is just off the boil.(You need to keep re-mixing as it sinks). Dip a clean cloth in it and spread it all over the oven sides, top and botom.

It will dry white and then go brownish as you use the oven but the baked on stuff sticks to the bicarb and is easier to clean off (buit not if you leave it months). It does look a bit messy but I put up with it for the sake of easy cleaning and it is not "nasty" like the various oven cleaners you can buy.
