Dyson Hand-held vacuums, any good?

I need one of those small handheld vacs. Mainly for hoovering up under the baby's highchair after messy meals. Is the dyson any good? Or can you recommend any good make or model please?

I will watch this with interest as I have a chronic bad back from over 30 years of lugging inefficient, heavy vaccuum cleaners around.

Have looked at the dyson ones but they seem horribly expensive.

I have started a thread asking about the rowenta handstick re-chargeable. It looks good.......

AliBellandthe40jingles · 01/01/2011 18:26

Yes I love my mini-Dyson.

I use it for clearing up after meals, 'sweeping' the kitchen and hall floors and doing up the stairs. Also v.good for dusting into corners and doing skirtings.

You couldn't have it instead of a big vacuum, but it saves me lugging the big Dyson out every day.

3littlefrogs · 01/01/2011 18:29

Which model have you got AliBell? Is it good on carpeted stairs?

McDreamy · 01/01/2011 18:31

I have one too, basic model, use it all the time! Excellent!

mollymax · 01/01/2011 18:31

I too love my baby dyson, as the children call it.
We have wood floors downstairs, a good sweep with a rubber broom then use the dyson.
It is expensive, but worth it.

arabella36 · 01/01/2011 18:34

Ali, which particular model of the mini-dyson do you have?

Can anyone tell me if there's any real-world difference between the DC30 and DC31 please?

Which model do you have mollymax and McDreamy?

Er, not sure. It is the blue-ish/purple one.

It is pretty good on the stairs, but we do go over it with the mini-turbo brush on the big dyson every few weeks. You can use the mini-turbo with the handheld - it comes with the animal version I think - but it zaps the battery so we tend not to. But perfectly possible to do.

I like being able to just do up the stairs quickly, and do the skirting and bannisters at the same time with the little brush that you can extend out over the nozzle. Means it gets done at least every week instead of once a month!

LoveBeingADaddysGirl · 01/01/2011 18:39

I love mine too, you can get reconditioned ones from the dyson website. Dh got mine from eBay after last Christmas.

noddyholder · 01/01/2011 18:41

We call ours the baby dyson too Smile its fab esp when you can't be arsed getting the big hoover out or if you need to do the stairs in a hurry.i always feel like lara croft with it in my hands!

arabella36 · 01/01/2011 18:42

Noddy, what model is yours?

Sounds like yours is the fancier one Ali

noddyholder · 01/01/2011 18:43

Oh don't know will go and look

noddyholder · 01/01/2011 18:45

DC16 orange and grey like a normal dyson

arabella36 · 01/01/2011 18:52

Do any of you know what specific difference the animal model has? (Trying to decide if its worth the extra money)

Thanks

also can I quickly ask please, does it have to be plugged into the mains or does it run off a battry and is completley portable

mollymax · 01/01/2011 19:01

Ours is the dc16
Have had it 2 and a half years with no problem
I do not rate the big dysons anymore, have a Henry for that, but baby is fab. :)

RobynLou · 01/01/2011 19:02

it runs off a battery - 10mins of vacing before it needs charging...

I got one for xmas and LOVE it, never thought I'd say that about a vac but it really is very good.

arabella36 · 01/01/2011 19:16

How long does the recharging take?

OP posts:
oldenoughtowearpurple · 01/01/2011 19:38

I have one, it's very sexy but heavyish - I suspect it's not significantly better than anything you can get for 24.99 at argos but it does look wonderful

Ingles2 · 01/01/2011 19:44

Dh just bought me one and I love it Grin
I'll have to check the model for you but it is fantastic at picking up white cat hair from my red velvet sofa!
I've also got painted stairs and its good for that... the henry hoover chips the paint as I drag it along
but best of all, my boys love hoovering with it as it looks like some space age gun! Result!

AliBellandthe40jingles · 01/01/2011 20:09

Recharging to full battery takes 3 hours. I tend to have the charger plugged in on the kitchen side all the time and then always put the dyson to charge when I've finished using it - I don't wait for it to run down. I'm sure I get more than 10 mins out of it, although that is the official number of minutes you get.

Think the animal comes with the mini-turbo head, which costs about £25 to buy separately IIRC.

LoveBeingADaddysGirl · 02/01/2011 09:12

I love using mine around the kitchn cupboards cause I've got a tiled floor so lots of dust/crap gets caught there, ih and in the cupboard where I keep the toaster, oh and under the highchair, and the stairs...

LoveBeingADaddysGirl · 02/01/2011 09:12

.....and the car.....

uggmum · 02/01/2011 09:24

I bought one before xmas. It's the animal one. I think it is really good. I have used it a lot, most days actually. It is really light and powerful.

I bought mine from Costco. I saved about £30. If you can't get to a Costco then Amazon had it for a good price.
