How much do you spend on weekly shopping?

I'm amazed how much I spend each week. We are just 2 adults and one baby! What do other people spend weekly on food? I'm wondering what's average.

arabella you shouldn't feel guilty unless you are throwing things away because they aren't getting used.

I rarely throw anything away, the odd bit of fruit or veg but everything gets used.
We eat well, have meat every day and the vast majority is free range.
Yes I could spend less, but I don't feel guilty for the amount I do spend because we don't waste things.

TeaOneSugar · 01/01/2011 16:14

In a normal week I spend £70 on my main Ocado shop, including cleaning stuff, dog food, toilet rolls, toothpaste, wash powder etc. I spend £9.99 a month on delivery, so an extra £2.50 per shop.

I spend about £10 - £15 extra on fruit and fresh bread during the week.

We are two adults and one 7 year old DD, me and DH take some food to work for lunches but DD has school dinners.

CybilScissorhands · 01/01/2011 16:15

If H goes, £90ish

If I go, I spend a smidge over that

there are 5 of us

CybilScissorhands · 01/01/2011 16:16

I plan to do maybe 4 BIG meals a week and have scrambled egg/beans on toast/soup on the other days

My kids have hot school lunches which costs more than the food shopping

brokeoven · 01/01/2011 16:17

so meal plan either for the week or two.

make shopping list along side the meal plan.

look through the cupbourds at what you have in, you can easily make meals from what you already have in.

look through your freezer, you could probably eat out of there too.

have a "something on toast" night for tea

Buy bread on offer and put into the freezer.

try not to get drawn into offers unless you budget for them.

get a slow cooker or dust off the one you own. i make loads of cheepo meals in my slow cooker.

double cook and freeze half.

have frozen veg in freezer as well as fresh.

bulk up meals with this frozen stuff.

DO NOT buy ready meals, they are expensive, take up room in yourfreezer and can be made better and cheeper by you.

good luck, it takes effort but its worth the savings, honestly Grin

check out Marin Lewis website, its brilliant.

mamatomany · 01/01/2011 16:32

At one point we were spending £150 on 2 adults 2 children and a baby.
Got that right down to £100 including all cleaning stuff.
I've just started using fairy liquid to clean everything and it works perfectly well.
Washing powder I get from costco, not sure if i do save money with that because there's always offers on at the supermarkets aren't there, so hard to compare but I guess that's the idea.

arabella36 · 01/01/2011 16:34

Brilliant tips Brokeoven thanks. Yes its true I shouldn't feel guilty unless I waste things - but I HATE when I throw out meat because I've not used it because I've had a disorganised week!

Thanks very much for all the advice. I can think of so many other things I'd rather spend money on than supermarket shopping. I'll definitely be trying some of these tips.

About £150-£180 a week for 2adults and 3kids plus we often top up with extra bottle of wine or take away.

I need to cut it down a bit but never seem able.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 01/01/2011 16:42

My brother in law is seriously loaded yet tight as a crabs arse, he spends £25 a week for two adults, I still chuckle over the 'great luxury coleslaw' domestic I once stumbled upon

It's a matter of principle for me, I refuse to spend a fortune on what is essentially fuel, don't see the point, I will however spend a fortune on holidays. Xmas Grin

Emjxxx · 01/01/2011 16:45

£100-£120 a week for 2 adults and 3 children includes cleaning products toiletries and nappies etc

arabella36 · 01/01/2011 16:46

Oh my God, imagine caring that much about luxury coleslaw expenditure!!!

BecauseItoldYouSo · 01/01/2011 16:51

We spend about £150 a week for 2 adults,1 3yr old and 2 cats, this includes toiletries and stuff. We don't buy alcohol except for special occasions (xmas, guests). This does not include money spent on take-aways or eating out.

I have tried meal planning for the week but too much food gets wasted this way as I often don't feel like eating or spending the time cooking what was planned and ends up in the bin. I find buying staples for the cupboard/freezer for a range of meals works better for us. My diet is very fickle and we do eat well. No meat meals would NEVER EVER work for my DH. He is a true meat and 2 veg man.

However when my DH works away this £150 pw changes into more like £75 pw for my DD and I.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 01/01/2011 16:55

It was fucking funny, he placed value coleslaw in trolley, she snatched it out and put luxury in, he snatched luxury out and put value in, all the while sis is squeeling, 'we can't have value fucking coleslaw at christmas, it's full of cabbage'

Bil is bellowing, put some cheese in it, no ones gonna bloody no

Thought she was gonna kill him when I swanned past with my tubs of luxury coleslaw strategically placed on top for maximum viewing Xmas Grin

He also meal plans to the extent of buying 1 carrot, they waste literally nothing and eat well tbh

Deafworm · 01/01/2011 16:56

we spend £50 at most (thats my budget but i rarely hit it) on 2 adults and 3 children, 5, 3 and 1. that is for everything, i dont menu plan at the moment but i used to, i just see what strikes me when im shopping

jellybeans · 01/01/2011 17:02

Over £120 a week usually, 2 adults and 5 DC. Trying to cut back as it seems to keep going up.

arabella36 · 01/01/2011 17:09

Hee hee hee at apocolypse's post, that gave me a good giggle!

LaurieFairyonthetreeEatsCake · 01/01/2011 17:11

£150 for everything including packed lunches for dh and dd, food for 2 adults and one dd, toiletries/cleaning products.

Occasional meals for mil and sil when they pop over.

Petrol is £80 a week for 2 cars Xmas Hmm

arabella36 · 01/01/2011 17:12

BecauseItoldyouso - I have that issue with my husband too. Once made a veg curry as there were lots of leftover veg in fridge. Trying not to waste food you see. It was pretty tasty but because there was no meat it just didn't satisfy him.

montysorry · 01/01/2011 17:21

Oh I forgot about school dinners. £25 pw for the 2 at school.
Bloody hell, I need to plan meals but have no idea how.

montysorry · 01/01/2011 17:23

So I'm spending £200pw when I take school dinners into account. Shock

How on earth can you shop for 5 on £50pw?

Shodan · 01/01/2011 17:51

I usually spend about £120-150 p/w, with one or possibly two meals out/takeaways on top. That's for 2 adults, one teen and one toddler.

I tried menu planning in an affort to cut down but found it worse, since there were some days I/we didn't fancy what was planned for that day, or we went out and didn't get back in time to cook it, or the toddler was playing up, or... well you get the gist.

So now I shop every couple of days for groceries and once a fortnight for loo roll, washing owder and so on. I find there's much less waste and I think it's working out cheaper, although I won't be able to tell until the next cc bill (onle started doing this during Dec and all presents etc go on my card too)

TrillianAstra · 01/01/2011 18:05

50p and I can make 18 meals out of one small chicken.

arabella36 · 01/01/2011 18:13

Shodan, is that amount of money for food alone or includes toilet roll etc etc?

OP posts:
jellybeans · 01/01/2011 18:15

Yes it's an extra £30 a week school meals for mine as well.

NewYearNewPants · 01/01/2011 18:17

about £80-90 a week for a family of four, including cleaning products etc.
