Sorting out my spare room.

A bit long sorry.

We have a very small spare room, a box room really, it used to have the computer in it and still have a desk and filing cabinet, but since we've changed to a lap top it's become a dumping ground.

I'm determined this year to transform it into a useful space, what I'd like from it is,

  • Some extra hanging space, especially for evening dresses, out of season coats etc.
  • Some shoe and handbag storage.
  • Somewhere to keep the laundry hamper, ironing basket and iron/ironing board, there won't be room to actually iron in there but I want them out of my room.
  • Storage for craft stuff (currently in dd's room and under my bed.

I might be expecting too much from such a small room but I can't handle it being a bombsite much longer.

I'm planning to clear it the flylady way a bit at a time.

Can anyone suggest where to go for furniture? I'm thinking a small wardrobe, some drawers under the window and maybe we'll fit in a tall but narrow unit on the far wall, there's the top of the stairs part that sticks out into the room, and we've got a bookcase sitting on it at the moment, but might fit a set of drawers that didn't come out too far.

Any ideas?

We need some sort of modular system probably, but nothing too expensive.

HAve you looked at IKEA, they are good on modular storage and will be the cheapest?
Some good ideas on their website too.

I thought about IKEA but it's such a big place, I wasn't sure where to start.

Has anyone used their modular storage?

Agree Ikea is where you need to head for. Have a look through their site then go to the store where they have really clever (IMO) layouts where they cram unthinkable amounts of storage into the tiniest of places

Thanks everyone, I think we'll have to have a trip to IKEA when DH is off work later in the week.

It sounds from your list as if you really want to turn your spare room into a dressing room. Why don't you have it properly fitted as such, rather than buying bits of furniture? Getting a carpenter in isn't necessarily very expensive and you will get much more out of the space if it is fitted properly.

TeaOneSugar · 27/12/2010 14:43

I suppose in my mind it's a cross between a dressing room and general storage, partly about getting "stuff" out of our bedroom, and partly about "a place for everything", I've also got a pantry which needs a similar refit and can play a part in general storage.

A carpenter could work, could certainly do with drawing up a plan, I'll speak to DH, we need to agree a budget really before I get too carried away.

You could try Store, they will do a free plan for you in the Elfa design, which is like the IKEA Antonius range but better and more expensive.
