what do you do with the dc's masterpieces?

dd1 (3.9) is constantly creating piles of crap art and craft masterpieces, which she is keen for me to display. The fridge and freezer are covered. She gets put out if I chuck her meisterwerks, so is there a good way of managing this, other than sneaking them into the recycling in the dead of night (current status quo)?

one space on one wall for each dd (well, there's room for a few but they only go up if i like them), the others get put in a 'no its not a recycling bin darling' plastic bin awaiting eventual sorting and throw out once they have forgotton about them. I keep the odd item for posterity in their treasure box.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 23/12/2010 16:51

The dc's can keep a few current ones, everything else gets photographed and kept in their own 'art folder' on the computer, then recycyled.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 23/12/2010 16:51

ah, of course, a "definitely not recycling" bin Smile.

I keep a few special ones and each of them has a memories box (one of those large self-assembly cardboard ones from children's ikea).

I bought 2 of those Ribba (?) frames from Ikea so they each have one picture nicely displayed.

We have one dedicated area of wall in the kitchen and also a 'picture of the week' Blush which is on the front of the fridge.

With 3d creations I have no more than 3 on display at any one time - on top of the dresser. So if a new one is made then one of the others needs to be recycled. I photograph the one that is being recycled for posterity.

Just reading this back, I think I'm barking mad. Xmas Smile

i think it sounds alovely iddea deux [fmsile]

picture of the week is a genius idea. then last week's can be moved to the definitely not recycling box, and we actually get a degree of throughput, rather than a paper and cereal box mountain.

We have picture of the week too, on the kitchen door.
A lot our sent with daddy to work where he throws it away puts it on the wall. :)

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 23/12/2010 17:10

really lovely ones go on the fridge for a while others migrate straight to a bag by by the side of the wardrobe which is then sorted (very occasionally)by the dd's and they are allowed of items to put into folder in the loft so they get to keep their favourites.

Iwasthefourthwiseman · 23/12/2010 19:47

All really good ideas, I'm so going to institute Picture of the Week!

I recently bundled a load into an envelope and sent them to my mum which she loved! I've recently bought a laminator so plan to laminate them to make mats etc.

FrostyAndSlippery · 23/12/2010 19:57

When we get a bigger house I'd really love a massive cork or felt board specifically for their stuff.

DD has done a lot of Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock style stuff at nursery. Too many to display.

The ones that were just really randomly splodged I cut up, as they were different colours - we've used them to make a snowman, snowflake, Santa and angel :)

overthemill · 23/12/2010 20:03

we used to (mine are now 17, 15 and nearly 12 so slowing down somewhat on the creativity!)

  • put up everything they brought home on fridge, cork board etc
  • after a bit, put them in a big art folder
  • once every while cull the folders getting them to help choose when they were old enough and keep that stuff in a smaller folder which we still have and every so often we go through it to embarrassment or cries of 'ooh, lovely' depending on who we are!
Deux · 24/12/2010 12:56

Oh yes, a laminator. I have one too Xmas Blush.

I get the DCs to draw pictures using felt tip pens on A5ish size paper then laminate, punch holes in the top and put ribbons through the holes. Send these to the GPs and they adore them. Can get them in an A5 envelope with large letter stamp.

What a good idea to cut them up to make other things. Will try that.

This is such a nice thread. Xmas Smile

I have a ringbinder with plastic wallets and dc can choose which pictures go into the wallets for keeping

grumpypants · 31/12/2010 09:33

I have a scrap book each and put the really good nice ones in there (Happy Christmas Granny!) each year. Plus, we have a few on the fridge, but swap them. TBH it's not something they are terribly fussed about, so long as I admire them appropriately, and they never see them in the recycling.

Recycling bin for some.

The good ones are on the fridge and they have 2 cork noticeboards on one wall in their room where there are lots of different bits they have done at school.

One of the lovely glittery firework ones done by dd1 has been framed and is in the dining room as it is SO lovely
