Do you Iron?

ilovemyfestivehens · 17/12/2010 19:30

I take the clothes out of the machine and hang up on hangers in the bedroom (or outside in the summer), then just hang up in the wardrobes.

They are creased when I take them out, so I iron stuff for the next day as I don't have time to stand and do piles of ironing.

Some people don't do any ironing, but what do they do about stuff like shirts which are always creased? Do you just tumble dry or go around creased?

dh takes his shirts to the laundry to be washed and ironed. Anything else is done on an ad hoc basis, but to be honest it's pretty rare. None of us (apart from dh) wear shirts regularly.

ilovemyfestivehens · 17/12/2010 19:32

Both my dcs wear shirts for school and I have women's shirts that need ironing. I'm curious to know how people don't bother ironing.

Never. Never owned a hair drier either. Creases fall out and hair dries on its own.

BTW I don't buy anything linen.

Beveridge · 17/12/2010 19:41

Interesting kendoddI actually find the hairdryer invaluable for avoiding ironing - put on crumpled work shirt, blast it while blasting hair, hey presto! Looks ok (mostly).

If something particularly requires it, I will get the old board out. But it's so long in between times that last time, I had t to ask DH how to get the bit open on the iron to put the water in as I'd forgotten how to do it Blush

Life is too short to spend hours a week ironing (I'm a perfectionist so it would take me that long easily). I'd rather use that time to read a good book.

blueberrysantabait · 17/12/2010 19:44

Iron?? isn't that a metal used to make fences?

OverflowingMum · 17/12/2010 19:45

NO. Never.well hardly ever!
with 6DC it is as much as I can manage to keep vaguely on top of the washing without having to iron too LOL
I either tumble dry stuff, or hang it straight out of washer. DH irons his work shirts though, mostly in the mornings.Occassionally I'll iron some work clothes for myself but on the whole I purposely buy stuff that doesnt need ironing.
DC also all wear polo shirts and sweatshirts for school...thankfully!
Agree that life is WAY too short for ironing!!

twirlymum · 17/12/2010 19:50

MiL even irons socks, towels, and flannels Xmas Shock

I made it very clear to DH I would not be doing this! I iron the bare minimum- shirts, blouses, linen etc

Limited ironing here. DD's school shirts, the occasional linen item and then it's weddings, funerals and job interviews.

twirly - socks? I didn't know socks could be creased!

PestoEatsSnowWarnings · 17/12/2010 19:59

I iron everythign

allnightlong · 17/12/2010 19:59

Rarely, life is too short.

BigChiefOrganiser · 17/12/2010 20:00

Nope, DH does it. A friend mentioned that she had bought a dryer with a steam function, and doesn't have to iron anything after they've been in that. Sounds fabulous for DH aren't I a good wife?

twirlymum · 17/12/2010 20:03

slimyak they can't. The point is that she irons creases into them!

TheUnmentioned · 17/12/2010 20:07

no, never have.

AnnieLobeseder · 17/12/2010 20:08

I flap and fold. First you shake clothes out as you hang them carefully to dry. Then when they're dry, immediately fold them very neatly, pressing out the wrinkles as you do so. The big mistake people make is chucking dry clothes all rumpled into the basket.

I have no idea how people find the time to iron.

I suck at it anyway, I make clothes look even more wrinkled!

That said, we don't wear shirts in this house. DD has school shirts but they seem fine.

biryani · 20/12/2010 15:03

I iron everything, including socks and pants. I think you can always tell if something hasn't been ironed, even if it looks OK.

dikkertjedap · 20/12/2010 15:39

I iron everything, also very good to kill bacteria and viruses if not killed through washing. I think it looks so much nicer (not just clothes, but table cloths, bedlinen, etc.) and you know straight away if school clothes need remarking or if anything needs to be fixed. This doesn't mean that I enjoy doing it, but it is just one of those things that needs doing.

dikkertjedap · 20/12/2010 15:40

... and I love linen duvet covers and sheets and linen tea towels ...

BlingLoving · 20/12/2010 15:41

We iron nothing except work shirts. And at least half of thse are done by our cleaner (if we're organised enough to have them washed in time for her to iron them when she comes). Everything else gets a good shake and gets put on a hanger then worn.

BeenBeta · 20/12/2010 15:57

I dont mind ironing really. The trick I find is not to let it build up into a mountain and do it a few times a week.

We have a TV in the kitchen, so generally we bung one of the 80's music satelitte channels on and sing along to Spandau Ballet et al and it all flows along nicely.

I don't own an iron or a tumble dryer and I don't use fabric conditioner (I actually make my washing powder because I am a loon).

I take clothes out of the washing machine straight away, or if I've forgotten, run them on a spin cycle and then take them out straight away, shake each piece well and lay over the sheila maid, smoothing it down over the rod. They dry with no creases. Honestly! Even my MIL, who is immensely houseproud and ironing-fixated, did not believe I had no iron.

If my linen has been hanging in the wardrobe a while or has creased for some other reason, I hang it up in the bathroom while I have a shower and any creases drop out.

Himalaya · 21/12/2010 09:17

Nope. Or very rarely. Kids wear school uniform shirts that don't need ironing. Boys, so no summer dress malarky. DP doesn't wear smart shirts that often. What else needs ironing? I mainly use the iron for melting Hama beads together.

My mum irons everything.

GraceK · 21/12/2010 09:32

My mum used to do loads of ironing but whinged about it all the time - she put my sister & I in charge of our own ironing at 16 and not unsurprisingly we both stopped immediately. Granny now pays someone else to do it. Sister & I both buy non-iron clothes (so no linen - I actually put stuff back if it looks like it'll crease). Husband wears M&S non- iron shirt - hang them up in a hanger immediately you take them out if the machine & run your hands down both sides to push out the creases. Hang off Sheila Maid. Works on thick cotton fabrics too.

Iron comesout for hatches, matches & despatches. Waistcoats are good for covering up emergency creased shirts.

Seona1973 · 21/12/2010 13:43

I iron shirts and the kids stuff for school but nothing else unless I am going out for a special occasion (not often!). Shirts get hung on hangers after washing and hung from the clothes horse. I iron once a week on a Sunday and it is much faster now using my new steam generator iron too

happysunshinedays · 21/12/2010 14:18

I do as little as possible, although I do DDs school uniform. Don't have a tumble drier and sometimes I'm too disorganised to get wash out of the machine for a while. Those things usually need an iron but sometimes I don't get round to it!
