Do you use a washing up bowl?

Have heard several people on Mumsnet say they don't use one/have no need for one.
Was just wondering what your reasons were if you don't have one.

I have a bowl, but it lives in the cupboard under the sink and only comes out when I am 'doing cooking' and want to have hot soapy water ready to dump things in as I go

It never stays in the sink over night and isnt used more than 4 or 5 times a month

I dont hate them or anything they are just somewhere to dump clutter

DilysPrice · 18/12/2010 11:37

I think I may have started this on the precious thread. I hate them with a passion, they get so manky and even if you clean them religiously they get scratched and horrible and ugly.

I agree that there is a problem with getting rid of spare tea dregs while you've got something soaking in the sink, which is why a 1 1/2 bowl sink was top of my list when we redid the kitchen (also a dishwasher). Sinks have a sievey drainy thing in the plughole.

overmydeadbody · 18/12/2010 11:39

yuk yuk yuk

I do not use one. There is no need for them.

overmydeadbody · 18/12/2010 11:41

I never washi up in a sink full of stagnant water either. I use a running tap. And no, it doesn't use more watrer if you know how to do it properly.

AnnoyingOrange · 18/12/2010 11:43

I never use one. I have a dishwasher and one and a half sinks, so no need.

Georgimama · 18/12/2010 11:46

I hate washing up bowls with a passion. We have just bought a dishwasher (happy, happy day) but I used to just make sure I had tipped out all excess liquid/done the swilling before starting the washing up. In extremis liquids could be tipped down the downstairs cloakroom sink.

My mother is wedded to hers. The only thing I can think that causes an inconvenience about not having one is that you don't have a handy vom bowl available during sudden nocturnal illness (naturally my mother would buy a new washing up bowl immediately if it was used for this!). Apart from that, no good reason for them. Manky and yuk.

festivefriedawhingesagain · 18/12/2010 11:47

I use one because I have only one sink. If I had a second sink or half sink I wouldn't, but I need to tip away tea dregs/rinse bits of ketchup off the plates.

It gets cleaned and replaced regularly though.

sunfunandmum · 18/12/2010 11:53

Another thing , this fits non standard plugholes. It works fairly well in our sink. It also goes in the dishwasher at the end of the day. But really I like it as it comes in chewy rubber in nice colours.

TheNextMrsClaus · 18/12/2010 11:59

I detest them; we had to use one here for about 18 months before we replaced the kitchen because the old sink didn't have a plug. I hated the fact that it was so small and got so filthy underneath.

I rarely wash up (we have a dishwasher), but if I do I fill the half-sink with very hot water and dip everything in it to rinse.

The bowl has now been relegated to cleaning/DIY duties!

FreeButtonBee · 18/12/2010 11:59

I hate washing up bowls. I sort of wash up under a running tap but I put the plug in, throw in a bit of fairy and start washing up in an inch or less of water. I don't think you need much more than that for averagely dirty dishes.

By the time i've finished, the sink is normally only about half full. But I do have a dishwasher for crockery and cutlery so only pots and pans and delicate stuff needs hand washing. Plus our sink is HUGE so waiting for it to fill takes ages.

VeryStressedMum · 20/12/2010 09:37

I hate washing up bowls. My friend uses one and I see her rinse her dishes in a bowl of soapy (and not that clean) water and leave them to dry still covered with washing up liquid suds - makes me shudder a bit.

worldgonemad72 · 20/12/2010 20:37

i use one, my sink is ceramic and i dont want it getting scratched or cracked. Its washed after every use.

tomgoodswife · 20/12/2010 20:43

No one seems to have them Australia but then I came here and everyone has them my MIL bought me one so kept it but have always wondered why I have it. Yes it does get manky underneath I may just go and throw it away now.

highhorse · 20/01/2011 14:55

Thread's a month out of date now but wanted to thank Clarasmummy for starting it. Have read all posts and binned bowl. Kitchen feels so much cleaner now and I have one less job to do. I love that MN is re-educating me Grin.

I don't have one, I don't like them at all.

Another one who washes up in running water, I cannot see how you can get things clean and rinsed otherwise.

Wash with rubber gloves on in lava hot water.

I am sure you are so happy I shared this boring aspect of my life Smile

I won't eat food off of plates cleaned in a washing up bowl. Even at wakes.

Naomih11 · 22/04/2018 14:09

I have been reading this thread and have thought about ditching the bowl, I will trial it this evening

Gwhit · 22/04/2018 15:21
