You know the plugs in the bathroom sink. The pop up ones that you can take out and they spin round. How do you clean them ?

The bit at the bottom, the twirly bit get all clogged up with hairs and gunk, it's discusting and I can't bear to touch it. What do other people do ? Also, when I look into the plug hole there's that bit of metal that sticks out a couple of inches down and hairs etc get caught on that and I don't know how to remove it. It makes me wretch.

We're very careful about not letting hairs etc go down the plughole but it's inevitable that some do and after time it all gets gungy.

I feel sick just typing this. I have an aversion to bathroom gunk.

What do you lovely ladies do ???

Thanks

We're supposed to clean the plug too?

AMumInScotland · 05/12/2010 17:49

An old toothbrush works wonders - you can scrub the twirly bit with it, then clean it off and do the bit down the hole. Or, if your aversion to the gunk is that bad, have two and throw the first one away once you've caught the hairs on it. You don't have to worry about rinsing the gunk down the drain, but try to avoid rinsing the hairs down if possible, so you don't get a hairball in the u-bend.

I always love your posts Yurbs.

My plumber openened my u bend the other day and there was a hairy ball of gunk the size of an apple, I nearly threw up.It was 10 years worth.

An old toothbrush...that means I'd have to touch it.

Usually I stand the plug in a glass with a couple of inches of 'one shot' caustic soda stuff for a few hours. I wondered what other people did.

Why thank you. :)

I would say likewise Smarties, but you've just added what sounds like a fairly revolting job to my weekly clean.

peachybums · 05/12/2010 20:35

I got a big pair of tweezers i stick down there and pull gunk out sick face

We had a plumber out as DD1 put a £2 coin down ours a few mths ago and it was still full of hair down there so i dont think you can ever get it all Confused

pinksmarties · 05/12/2010 22:02

That's so disgusting ! Why isn't anyone else responding to my problem plughole ? What do you all know that I don't ? Forgot to say that on close inspection it's back and slimey too. What is that ? I don't put black slime down my sink. I dear I feel a bit ill.

Soda Crystals - pour a load down, wait a minute or so, flush with hot water and poke with toothbrush. Gleaming it was - I just did mine the other day.

I'm quite brave, I wipe off the hairy gunk with kitchen roll, then I set to with a pair of old tweezers pulling the rest out of the plughole.

Really satisfying, especially when you hook a huge hairball!!

southeastastra · 05/12/2010 22:14

you get over yourelf, pick up the plug and claen it

mylifewithstrangers · 05/12/2010 22:17

Yes to tweezers, toothbrushes, soda crystal hot washes etc. I also have a mini plunger that I use to 'pump' the black slime out. It's a horrible job, and needs doing 4-5 times a year (properly), obviously gets a general clean a couple of times a week too.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 05/12/2010 22:18

I must be odd because I love to clean out the furze from the plughole. The gunkier the better! I wait a few months until it's well and truly gunked up then get an old toothbrush of DS's and get to work. It is very satisfying! The black gunk that comes out! I like to collect it all on piece of tissue and admire my handywork afterwards. Grin

Get a big ol pair of blue bathroom rubber gloves on.

Seize offending matted hair/gunk. Flush down loo.

Rinse plug thingy in plenty of boiling water or soak in bleachy water if you must.

Takes 10 secs max to deal with the disgusting stuff.

Why put it in the bin?

Are you thinking about what the toilet and sewers are designed to cope with?

pinksmarties · 06/12/2010 12:29

Ok then I suppose I'll have to buy some rubber gloves and tackle the dirty job. I don't mind any other yucky jobs but pulling hairs from plugholes......oh my god.

And I've learnt from bitter expearience NEVER to put anything like that down the loo. My old Victorian pipes can't cope with such things.

Don`t forget the shower waste while your at itif you leave it too long and someone has long hair what looks like a dead rat comes out--retch!

heartsnflowers · 06/12/2010 12:33

Correction you`re at it sorry as you were.

LooL00 · 06/12/2010 13:22

So how do you clean the shower waste? Ours doesn't come out so I bung Mr Muscle unblocker down when it gets really slow.

pinksmarties · 06/12/2010 16:20

I have an old bath with the old fashioned fixed plughole (much better)and the shower is in it so everyone just takes out their bit of hair when they've showered and none goes done.
