I am moving in January into a smaller house in January and need tips on everything really.

What stays, what goes etc etc etc.

First full house move so a little daunting.

I feel for you as we are also moving in January. This will be the 4th time in 2yrs!. This was supposed to be long term let but landlord decided they wanted to move back in after only 9 months.

This was just beginning to feel like home, I'd hung pictures, emptied all the boxes as in the previous 2 houses I hadn't bothered as was only in them for 6 months. I am so down about moving again that I am not really looking forward to ChristmasSad.

I also hire a van and close family help on the day. When we moved in here I was 4 months preg and couldn't/wasn't allowed to help much. Now I have a 4 month old and had a section so same will be implied.

I am following this thread closely as I always seem to get rid of loads before a move and then find that I am still moving far too much stuff.

Good luck to all moving soon.

mumtoblaire sorry to hear you have had such a bad run of luck with renting. It's so unstable isn't it?

I have been trying to rid myself of make up I don't use and using up toiletries. I would be embarassed to move my hoard of it!

Trying to work on partner and his sodding t shirt collection- even shrinking them in dryer doesn't work!

I throw stuff away and then pretend to know nothing about itGrin. If it's lying around then it's fair game.

I am strongly following the "If it's not been used/worn/on display for a year (or in my case unpacked) then it's not going to be missed"

I can see me moving with a lot less this time. Also start packing as soon as possible because life takes over and before you know it, it's the day before you move and the kitchens not been packed.

I found moving a great time to declutter. Just asking myself 'do I want this in my new house?' was quite simple.
yes= keep it
no= get rid (I had boxes all set up in spare room for charity shop/freecycle/ebay). Not good at 'binning' but tried to be ruthless...
maybe=keep (for me)

Try to have a place for everything in the new house. And yes, if it's not beautiful or practical or sentimental - you don't need it.

Have been given though rough move date of 15th Jan so really need to get my arse into gear!

dietcokesholidaysarecoming · 12/12/2010 21:50

Yay good luck with the move. Try and do a task a day.

Anyone got any tips for how to cope with DPs hoarding

SantasKnickersOnMyHead · 12/12/2010 22:00

Tell him either the crap goes, or he does...and he takes it all with him.

Win win Grin

dietcokesholidaysarecoming · 12/12/2010 22:05

LOL. Think I will just resort to shrinking things in tumble dryer

childrens clothes a night mare boys are easier tho...we get given loads of stuff so I have the following rules...only allowed to have 3 pairs of jeans a a time, 5 short and 5 long slevved t shirts then 3 sweatshirts things that tend to get out of control tho are sports kits not sure how many football kits, cricket gear, hockey shoes, indoor trainers, etc they have each....less good with the girls as I am a sucker for the pretty stuff -- my 4 yearold needs a new pair of jeans but I will come back with some diamonte number from Monsoon....has any one a similar system for girls clothes?

dietcokesholidaysarecoming · 16/12/2010 21:38

Mulranno that is a very good ethos to have about clothes.

I buy too much.

Looks like we are moving mid feb. Yay!
