Metal windows going mouldy - can you help?!

We moved this year so this is our first winter in our new home. We have original 1920's crittal windows all through the house and can't afford to replace them at the moment.

With the cold weather we have been getting lots of condensation on the windows especially in the bedrooms with us asleep in. I have been wiping any puddles up from the sills but on going to clean the glass today noticed that we now have black mould sprouting on the metal parts Sad

Any ideas as to what to do (apart from scrub it off) but to keep it away? Thanks!

bump for you

Spray some Dettol Mould & mildew remover on. Leave for a bit and then wipe off. It should keep it at bay for a while.

Thanks - that will help with the cleaning which I need to tackle on a dry day so I can open the casements etc. But I am thinking all the while it is wet on the frames it will keep coming back.

Has anyone got any tips to delay/prevent this? APart from 10k's worth of new windows of course!

The bleach in the dettol will prevent a reoccurance for quite a long time. I do it about 2 x a year.

I would get a dehumidifier - worth every penny. We have one for the same reason.

Thanks again for tips. Will do the dettol thing for sure. CAn't really use a dehumidifer as is all over the house in several rooms Sad Have seen some crystal dehumidfier thingys in Lakeland - anyone heard of/used them? Lakeland stuff is usually pretty good ....

A dehumidifier works in more than one room if you leave the doors open. Then you can just move it when you need to. They are brill.

I saw a window mould remover in wilkos yesterday when i was looking for something else so it might be worth it!

I use the dettol stuff, and works a treat. Also my first winter in a place with metal window frames; more recent but I can see that mould will have a go given a chance - the dettol stuff has worked so far, and I wipe the condensation up every morning. Can see the bits round the window need recaulking but will do that when it's better weather!

Maybe it's worth trying a mini dehumidifier in on the window sill while the curtains are closeed, just for that more humid window space? Was thinking of trying it but not sure if it would be safe to have the humidifier that close to curtain material, so maybe not
