Nasty black stuff in bath toys

When I use DD's squirty bath toys, black bits come out. How do I get rid of them and prevent them coming back?

It's mould or mildew, I tried cleaning ours out with detol, couldn't get it all out though. Ended up chucking them and getting new ones, cheapy squeezy ones from asda.

katiepotatie · 18/11/2010 21:50

sorry that wasn't much help Confused

winnybella · 18/11/2010 21:52

katie is right, I tried boiling them, bleaching them...it doesn't work, you just can't get it all out.

brockleybelle · 18/11/2010 21:54

I had this problem and ended up chucking them out as there was no way I could get rid of the muck. DS now has buckets, spades, plastic cars in bath ie all can be easily rinsed out; no small holes for the mould to grow.

ididnamechangeforthis · 19/11/2010 08:43

What about soaking them in a solution of Milton (or whatever supermarket similar brand?) Soak them for a while and whilst in the water squeeze the toys to get some of the solution in the toys and repeat several times?

I've used sterilising solution for the bath toys before and it works quite well.

Hope this helps.

bin them, buy new ones and then store them in the airing cupboard to they dry out properly

TheGrumpalo · 19/11/2010 08:59

I ended up binning mine, couldn't get it out. Sorry that's not much help.

linspins · 19/11/2010 09:45

I threw mine out too...as someone else has said, you could try milton, but when I did this, I just ended up with 'sterile' black bits!!
I think the trick is to get cheap toys, only use a few at a time then bin when grotty.
Or get toys that don't allow water in - and if you find anything like this, let me know... Grin

Thanks everyone I feared as much but will give Milton etc a go before binning them.

I'm sure I read on another thread to soak the toys in coca cola? I might be trying that with equally grotty bath toys at home as I hate the smell of Milton.

rodformyownback · 20/11/2010 04:50

Just came across this thread and have been inspired to throw out grotty bath toys. How liberating! Thanks Grin

Dunelm Mill do packs of squirty toys for silly cheap if you want to replace them.

dikkertjedap · 20/11/2010 18:30

I use bleach - sometimes works, not always. If it doesn't work I throw them away. I squirt pure bleach in, leave for 24 hours and then rinse lots of times with hot water ...

moragbellingham · 20/11/2010 20:42

I've Milton'd my DDs but am fed up of suprise bits squirting out so have decided no more.
