What can we do - condensation

Hi,

A few weeks ago we found lots of mould growing in our rented flat and all over our new furiture. We were promptly told by our agents that it was condensation and it was really our problem.

I called Environmental health. The first guy came out ad was very nice about it saying it wasnt necessarily our fault and could have been there for years before etc so he went back and wrote a report.Anyway I bleached everything and cleaned it all up and 2 weeks on its all coming back. We have kept windows open and air circulating and kept furniture away from the walls but its still back.I had someone else out today from environmental health saying the main problem was condensation but they were going to bring a damp specialist in for a potential penetrating damp issue. The one today said I shouldnt worry as it wasnt a big issue to my daughters health and I couldt really do much apart from buy a condenser tumble dryer, unless the damp specialists had something more to say.

Winter is upon us and this problem is only going to get worse. Its mainly in our bedroom. We have decided to move up once the tenancy is up but until then what can we do?
I feel a bit let down as we try and kept the place well but have to live in these conditions. Is it really up to us to sort out a problem that has potentially been there for ages?

Yes we spoke about that also. We have a big lounge and its the only place I can put the washing to dry (we are not allowed to hang it outside) and our bathroom is too small to accommodate the airer. They have also made a note of that.

Dehumidifier.That's the only choice.
Sounds like a "lifestyle" problem rather than structural.
Is the property new-ish?I wouldnt just up and leave as you might find the same elsewhere,it's a problem with new well insulated houses.
Also opening windows will only help while they're open, iyswim, and now in winter will also let damp in as cold air doesnt hold moisture well

My husband said that when we first moved in there was mould on one of his wardrobes and he took a picture of it. (the landlord left 2 wardrobes and kitchen appliances)otherwise it's unfurnished. Some of the guys who eventually came out (days after I kept calling the agent about it)had said they had come out for a similar problem before. But is it up to us to buy the dryer? The other thing is where we would put one as ther isn't any room in the kitchen. (we will be moving out in a few months but obviously problems will arise in the furture)

My husband also rents his house out in Mancs and has never had any problems with the tenants. I guess there are landlords and landlords!

There is no etractor fan in the bathroom but we always leave the window open. In fact the bathroom is fine (no mould in there)
There is no extractor either in the kitchen if that might have helped but we open the window when cooking. Ours is a ground floor flat.

I had a builder round today to give me a quote for repairing a damp wall due to a leak. He re-iterated about not drying clothes on radiators, which I knew and never do. Asked if I was ok hanging wet in my boiler cupboard and he said that was fine.

Interestingly though he said that keeping open your bathroom window while or after having a bath or shower is useless if you also keep the door open. So door closed from now on. Keeping windows open in this damp weather also brings the damp air in so if its a dry blowy day open all the windows and blow the place through then close again.

Hoover frequently because dust in the air makes mould worse and keep all furniture on outside walls at least 2 inches away from the wall. Avoid long curtains and nets.

yes, why we close the door too with window open. I hoover at least twice a day as I have a messy one year old!
