Looks like we've been keeping the coal in there so how do I make it sparkle?

It's a cast iron, enamel affair that you could refer to as 'vintage' but is really old and shabby in a grubby not a chic way.

bleach or bath power. Harsh but works.

Jif/zif and a scrubbing brush got my old enamel bath from grey to white.

Fill with hot, hot water and chuck in a load of bio washing powder. Use cotton wool soaked in washing powder and water to keep round the taps wet. Leave overnight, empty and scrub. I saw Kim and Aggie do this and it worked a treat on my grotty bath and kitchen sink.

i have this problem too- bleach just leaves suspicious looking brown marks ( I think which means rust is coming through)

Rod - this sounds like a good plan other than the last bit!

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 20/11/2010 11:03

Yup either bio washing powder or denture cleaning tablets (loads of them), soak and scrub.

ricketyrock · 20/11/2010 11:06

do i have to leave overnight or a few hours? Im not sure ive got bio tablets - what about dishwasher tablets? though I do have legs so i could go out

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 20/11/2010 11:09

Dishwasher tablets would probably work too but you'll need loads. A whole small pack of bio washign powder would be better.

The longer it soaks the less you'll need to scrub...

needtogetalife · 20/11/2010 11:10

oh this is exactly what I need to know, will it work even when it need re-enameling. My bath is all rough feeling (never actually have a bath, only shower but still want it to look clean)

ricketyrock · 20/11/2010 11:34

ok got it

mousymouse · 20/11/2010 14:54

carefull with enamel, strong stuff (vinegar, descaler) damages it and leaves the surfaces rough.
a mild cream cleaner and elbow grease. I would not soak anything for a long time in an enamel bath...

BlackBag · 21/11/2010 14:32

Went for it with elbow grease and cream cleaner, hard work but looks better. Will paint the coal before we put it all back.
