I have burnt white sauce onto stainless steel pan

How do I get it off again?

Last time I soaked, scrubbed, soaked, scrubbed again for about a week.

And yes, I should probably get some non-stick pans (or keep a better eye on the sauce).

Is there a magic way to get rid of it?

bicarb or baking powder.
enough water to cover the bottom of the pan, tea spoon of powder, bring to the boil on the hob. let cool down and then scrub.

Leave it to soak overnight with a dishwasher tablet - or dishwasher powder/liquid.

Cola. Has to be full sugar jobby. Bring to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes or so.

Thankyou!

Don't have cola, will Dr Pepper work? I feel an experiment coming on.

or you could use bio washing powder sprinkled into warm water and left overnight

mousymouse · 14/11/2010 19:54

dr pepper is the same as cola, I think, should work. I would drink it and use bicarb though :)

dearprudence · 14/11/2010 19:59

Dishwasher tablet in very hot water and leave to soak.

Dr Pepper fairly successful, has got about half of it off. Have now left soaking with bicarb.

Don't have a dishwasher (so no dishwasher tablets!)

Simmer some water in it with a bio washing tablet for about 20 mins.

MerryMarigold · 14/11/2010 20:45

Coke is amazing. It has quite put me off drinking it, the sugar/ teeth thing wasn't enough, but it's power of burn removal is scary!

MerryMarigold · 14/11/2010 20:46

(I also scrape at it with a blunt knife)...

catinthehat2 · 14/11/2010 20:49

I have washing soda in stock for this problem. Less than £1 for a bag. (nb, this isn't caustic soda which some people think - it's stuff you can happiliy chuck in with your washing).

Chuck some in pan with boiling water from kettle.

Clean it up the next day.

THat is it.

katiepotatie · 14/11/2010 20:54

Biological washing powder overnight in some boiling water, works a treat

MerryMarigold · 14/11/2010 20:57

Oooh cat, I'll be trying that. I do have some. And the biological.

mitochondria · 15/11/2010 22:41

And the conclusion is:

Dr Pepper - pretty good.
Bicarb - OK.
Bio washing powder soaking overnight - got all the rest of it off - so I think I declare washing powder the winner.

Of course the gunk may have been weakened by the Dr Pepper and the bicarb. I really need to burn stuff onto 3 saucepans so I can do a comparison.

I also didn't make it a "fair test" as I didn't leave them for the same amount of time.

I bung a load of salt in and water and boil for a bit. Lifts the gunk off and no overnight soaking
