DH is a chip head. He really is. And I loathe greasy food but he does love chips.

Has anyone got one of these, are they good?

I want one to make tempura in.

Watching and waiting for the mn reviewers of truth :o

ChippedChinaTeacup · 14/11/2010 10:21

I know quite a few people who have them and love them! they do a lot more than just fry, apparently you can cook things like chilli in them and make cakes..

I'm contemplating buying one for us :o

FellatioNelson · 14/11/2010 19:14

I am quite taken with the idea of this at the moment. It has very good reviews.

FellatioNelson · 14/11/2010 19:16

OK please don't click on this link! I've just realised it had brought up our personal details! If you want to look at the item it is a Morphy Richard Intellichef.

4andnotout · 14/11/2010 19:17

My grandparents (who are
QVC and gadget addicts) have one and they rave about it, to the extent that she rings me everytime they are on the bloody tv!

Furball · 14/11/2010 19:19

nelson - tis ok - your details don't come up!

I've been there and done that with linking to Amazon and nearly had a panic attack, thinking everyone would be thrown into my account.

FellatioNelson · 14/11/2010 19:20

Yes, it does seem fab. I linked to Amazon and the reviews are fab - it seems to do everything! I found it when I was looking for a rice cooker. I already have ovens and steamers and gadgets galore but I think for a small family or a small kitchen this sounds ace. (very tempted even though I don't really need it.)

Alouiseg · 14/11/2010 19:21

Fellatio, I clicked and it was fine!!!

You've got an aga! You don't need a slow cooker, which is essentially what it is!

FellatioNelson · 14/11/2010 19:21

Oh really? Thank you! Phew!!!!

FellatioNelson · 14/11/2010 19:22

Sorry, that last post was to Furball but thanks to you as well!

FellatioNelson · 14/11/2010 19:23

Bloody hell - had a bit of a mini heart attack there.

The3Bears · 14/11/2010 19:25

My mum has one and she thinks its really good she says it kind of leaves a coating on the chips/wedges and its nice :) she hates the fact it takes 45 minutes though, compared to the normal 5 in an ordinary chip pan :)

I think the price is a bit ridiculous but i would like one if they were much cheaper :)

Oven chips are healthier than frying though and they're is some yummy ones in m&s.

FellatioNelson · 14/11/2010 19:28

I have had three deep fat fryers over the years - I ditch them all in the end, because of the house smelling like a chip shop!

Winetimeisfinetime · 14/11/2010 19:30

I have an Actifry and it is quite good at cooking chips I would say that they are nicer than oven chips but not as good as deep fried ones But then we always bung in far more than the recommended amount and don't faff around drying the potatoes as per the instructions, so they would probably be even nicer if we did it properly.

Haven't used it for anything else though, so can't say if it cooks other things well.

BUT.... this is our second Actifry as the first one did indeed burst into flames. It was quite dramatic but luckily dh was in the kitchen so put the fire out quite quickly. John Lewis insisted on replacing it for us, hence we are on our second one.So far it hasn't spontaneously combusted but we are very careful with it.

So all in all I would say it was ok for low fat chips, but don't leave it unattended.

notapizzaeater · 14/11/2010 19:31

I love mine, but agree its a pain it takes so blooody long - but the chips do taste good. I also do stir fries/sausages/onions in them. Can't do anything in raw batter though as it doesn't cook it quick enough (and its huge so takes most of a cupboard.)

FellatioNelson · 14/11/2010 19:38

How does it actually make the chips low fat though? Surely it just uses a lesser quantity of fat, but the potatoes are still coated, and the outside surface is still fried?

notapizzaeater · 14/11/2010 19:42

If I do oven chips in it I don't add any more fat. Its because it uses just 1 teaspoon - don't know how much stays on them in a fryer. That said I do have a fryer that I use when we need to eat quickly.

MooMinCow · 16/11/2010 14:20

They are on offer on Idealworld channel today (you get free Tefal steamer too) Have had to drag myself away from telly as was becoming brainwashed by the camp chef demonstrating it...

mamijacacalys · 17/11/2010 17:26

After years of oven chips and me refusing to have the house smelling like a chippie, we are recent chip 'real' converts here, thanks to the Hairy Bikers.

These www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/thebestchipsyouhavee_93121
really are the best chips ever. Not sure they would turn out properly in an Actifry though. Anyone tried?

Fizzylemonade · 17/11/2010 18:20

I too have an Actifry which we bought in Costco for £100.

If you follow the instructions to make crunchy chips ie the right potato and the right oil they do indeed come out crunchy.

We use rooster potatoes, skin on, and vegetable oil and they come out softer like chippy chips but they don't taste as good but they are far less greasy.

They use that tiny spoon of oil which was what sold it to us as I was doing slimming world (this was back in the day when on a green day you could eat as much potato as you like)

We do roast potatoes in it to save room in the oven. Yes it is huge so it takes up space in your cupboard and on your worktop but it was worth it.

In fact we are using it for tea tonight Grin
