i have had my current dyson since 2000 and it really has given up now so dh has agreed i can buy a new one. at currys at the moment they have a 25% off when you trade in an old dyson - which is nice. so now all i need to do is decide which one to buy. any reccommendations?

just to help you - we have no pets, carpets upstairs, on stairs and downstairs, except for tiles in kitchen and lino in bathrooms.

I think most would say don't by a Dyson full stop! That was my answer when I was researching back in August! I bought a miele instead.

Do a search for some threads on Dysons. It made my mind up!

LaydeeC · 10/11/2010 10:39

I'm also going to say don't buy one - get yourself a henry instead - bloody brilliant!

funtimewincies · 10/11/2010 10:53

Sorry, I'd say don't buy a Dyson too! Mine worked brilliantly for about 3 weeks, then inexplicably lost suction, was no better than any other cleaner and was 3 times as heavy.

Only then did I realise the taking away/looking at it/bringing back/taking away again saga needed as it was too complicated for any mere mortal to sort out. We never did find out what was wrong and I gave up in the end.

A complete waste of money, I'm afraid Sad.

I loved my DC04 but have been less than enamoured with its replacement, a DC07. Too LOUD and not so well built and designed. It cost 80 quid less, although it was purchased 8 years later (how does that work??).
I am pretty sure that on the Dyson website they have a questionaire that ends by suggesting which Dyson model is likely to be best for your needs. I remain unconvinced that anything else can really touch Dyson for actually getting carpets clean, though. I wonder if Which? has done a relevant comparison study?

Our local shop highly recommended Sebo, btw, said that it was the most durable and reliable make you could get for the money (the one they use in their shop every day).

LoveRedShoes · 10/11/2010 12:12

Second these views- I have had dysons for as long as I remember. Bought a Henry on a whim for upstairs and it is 100 times better. More flexible, lighter, much cheaper and hygienic. Will NEVER buy another dyson. Hoovering, dare I say it, is almost a joy!

LoveRedShoes · 10/11/2010 12:13

Oh, and the suction on a Henry can be switched on so high, I struggle to move it!

PlentyOfPockets · 10/11/2010 12:22

After three bad Dyson experiences I got a Miele on the advice of a friend who is a professional cleaner. It's great. Really quiet, really powerful, gets right into the corners and doesn't shred the carpets. Best vac I've ever had.

Lovesdogsandcats · 10/11/2010 13:35

love my Dyson.
they do a £69 engineer visit where he will replace EVERY single part of your Dyson to make it as good as new - so, you get a brand new Dyson for £69...not bad at all.

LoveRedShoes · 10/11/2010 23:22

IMHO For the cost of a dyson, I wouldn't want to be paying an engineer to come out and replace parts or service, I would expect top notch longevity. Henry is less than £100. If it breaks I can replace it. I didn't ever think I would go against dyson, but once I had tried something else, I couldn't find a reason to go back.

soppypreggyloon · 11/11/2010 12:33

I love my dyson! I can't remember the model but it's an all floors version- turquoise colour so you can switch brushes off for tiles or laminate or on for carpets.

Never had a problem with it but I am not a hoovering obsessive! (code for lazy bum!)

I'd get the same again but the ball version as it looks way more manourverable!
I had a Henry style one and hated dragging the bloody thing about. Uprights are my choice.

AllarmBelly · 11/11/2010 14:13

I've got a Sebo. It's tiny, quiet, has a fab turbo brush (although we have to keep cutting the hair off it Blush ) and 16 bags lasted us about 3 years (low hoover use in this house too!).

Prior to that we had a Dyson and bits kept falling off it. The first thing to go was the clip that kept the long pole on, so it took two hands and bending at an awkward angle to use the damn thing. And emptying the thing while getting covered in vile dust.... and washing/drying its "sponge"....Never again.

AllarmBelly · 11/11/2010 14:16

Sorry, just to post something that might actually be useful :)

I read that uprights are better for large spaces and cylinders (small ones) are better for stairs. We have loads of stairs so went for the cylinder. Good luck!

earwicga · 11/11/2010 14:20

After doing a happy dance when my crap dyson finally kicked the bucket I bought a Henry and it is fab.

To answer your question, my sister has a dyson ball upright and it is very easy to manouvere.

haggis01 · 11/11/2010 14:33

I replaced old DC05 dyson with a Henry - not so good on carpet I thiought - ledd of the fine dust was lifted but all the extra tubes were great to connect together to hoover all the victorian cornicing near the ceilings in my house and also for doing the stairs. However, a big puff of black smoke came out of him after 3years and that was that!He also used to fall over if you dragged it too hard/fast and needed bags.
I got a Dyson cylinder 2 years back on offer - (orange colour bits) but hate it - the tubes are not long enough to reach up the stairs or do high up cleaning, its heavy and it the "on Board" tools keep fallling off.
So - if you are going for Dyson make sure it has long enough tubes for the stairs etc.

In John Lewis they strongly advised me to buy a miele but I was put off by having to buy bags and possibly washing filters - however, anyone I have ever spoken to who has one loves it.

crockydoodle · 11/11/2010 18:05

I love my miele. The bags hold a lot. The suction is brilliant compared to dyson. "Never loses suction " is a lie. When i had a dyson i had to keep washing the filters so it would suck.

JamieLeeCurtis · 11/11/2010 18:07

I am a Miele (Cat and Dog) fan too

amazonianwoman · 11/11/2010 22:36

Think I'm in the minority but I love Dyson!

Have just replaced our 12 year old Dyson DC02 cylinder with the DC32 Animal (from Currys with trade-in discount)

I luuurrrvvvvve it, great on all floors/stairs/in car etc. Could never be bothered with the hassle/cost of buying bags - I just tip the dust into our composter outside Grin I don't think that washing the filter is too much of a hardship.

We also have a Dyson DC22 (I think) in our static caravan - that also copes brilliantly with all the sand that gets dragged in by kids and dog Smile

I did however use a Dyson upright once (not the ball one) and found it very heavy and difficult to manoeuvre (I'm not a wimp!)

BangingNoise · 11/11/2010 22:37

Don't waste your money. We spend nearly £300 on a Dyson and it was rubbish. It was the Animal one.

Damo1 · 04/10/2014 10:13

Currently:

Dyson DC25 Multi Floor

Has a removable, washable filter. Add its energy efficiency and lack of dustbags into the equation and you're left with a happy wallet and lighter carbon footprint.

Performing strongly on laminate, hardwood and carpeted floors in tests, it's an excellent all-rounder.

MrWalletwithMothsonboard · 05/10/2014 09:39

Miele for me too. We have two, one up and downstairs. I had one of them as a Christmas present! My son loves using them so good result all round. Hate Dysons. To me they are just heavy plastic monsters. I prefer a bagged machine. Henrys are fan but an akward shape for stairs.

MrWalletwithMothsonboard · 05/10/2014 09:40

'Fab'

rabbit123 · 06/10/2014 11:49

The last decent Dyson was the DC04, which funnily enough was the last one made in Britain before Dyson went to the Far East.

Sebo, Miele and Henry are by far the best you can get. All bagged so far easier to keep clean with no constant filter washing or dustbins blowing dust everywhere and the bags last for months! These are the vacuums that shops, hotels, restaurants, cleaning companies etc use.

womaninthewildsofwales · 06/10/2014 11:55

I have the dc25 ball one- fab, small, handle folds into it and I can if I can be arsed carry it upstairs. DP bought me the dc59 digital slim cordless on Saturday... I am in love and I suppose he'll do too Grin

staples · 06/10/2014 17:01

I just replaced my Miele with a Bosch Pro silence plus. it's bag less, quiet and brilliant. I hated my dyson and miele

lazysummer · 06/10/2014 22:29

I have a DC04, which is still going strong. We need a new one, and DH is convinced that the DC41 is the best option. I'm stalling...
