What's the best way to remove mould from a painted ceiling?

Going to get rid of it then paint with bathroom paint. Is bleach the best option or is there something better?

In my old house we had a mould problem in a weird walk in wardrobe/large cupboard type thing. We used a mould remover product from Wilkinson's or Homebase which was great, lemme see if I can find a link.

ooh thanks, I will use bleach but this is what I wanted - recommendations for something more effective. We need to kill it all so it's not growing under the new paint

thanks :) just made a note of it

Or, I've used sugar soap to do this too.

StealthPoHoHoHo · 09/11/2010 09:14

sugar soap? Is that something I'd buy?

'HG MOULD REMOVER'from Lakeland--worked brilliantly in my shower on the silicone stuff but very strong smelling so open your windows!!

StealthPoHoHoHo · 09/11/2010 09:28

2 votes for HG - just to check though I want to use it on a painted ceiling??

Lizzzombie · 09/11/2010 11:15

Sugar Soap can be brought from any hardware shop. Its used to clean paintwork etc before painting. Its usually a powder form that you add to water.

I saw the HG range of products in Homebase this morning.

StealthPoHoHoHo · 09/11/2010 17:15

right, got the HG stuff from Homebase, will report back :)

Watching with interest!

StealthPoHoHoHo · 10/11/2010 21:05

it worked brilliantly - you'd never know we'd had mould :o
Note to self (or anyone reading): wear safety goggles :(

onadietcokebreak · 10/11/2010 21:12

Gosh is it that strong!

Will you still need to paint?

StealthPoHoHoHo · 10/11/2010 22:10

yes, I think so, new paint is meant to be mould resistant

onadietcokebreak · 10/11/2010 22:35

My mould is only tiny so hoping no need for repaint especially as rented

forevervacuuming · 10/11/2010 22:48

Have used Dettox spray and found it to be alright, but Flash spray with bleach requires a lot less elbow grease. Sugar soap first then you can use a paint with Microban afterwards. I've used this method on several rooms on two properties now and have found it works very well but would be very interested to hear of anything better :)

StealthPoHoHoHo · 11/11/2010 06:25

diet coke - no we definitely wouldn;t need to paint if we didn;t want to. There's no evidence of mould at all!
But wear goggles!!!
