crayons on wall - please help

My children drew on a wall - its a pale matte painted wall and the crayon is largely black and red. I've tried spraying it with general cleaner and wiping, but with no effect.

Other than painting over, does anyone know a way of getting the crayon off, without damaging the paint?

Not sure about matte. DD drew all over the house with oil pastels, but the paint is mostly semi matte and I had to use the wire dish thingy and dishwasher liquid to get it off.

Someone here mentioned hair dryer, I think.

I tried babywipes - nothing I'm afraid. Its like the crayon is permanently attached to the wall - which I don't get, because you can pretty much scratch it off paper. Will try the wire mesh do-dah. Thanks.

I was going to say babywipes too.

Is it wax crayon? If so I seem to remember that Cif / Jif gets it off.

TheHouseofMirth · 02/11/2010 21:00

I got crayon off our wall with one of these.

If it is wax, place newspaper or something similar over the top and iron over with a warm iron...iron melts wax, paper absorbs it.

Flash Mark & Stain Eraser.

Weird white block, gets stuff off walls. But I've found it hard to get hold of a replacement.

Thanks everyone for all the tips - I've done the iron and paper trick with melted candle on a carpet (with good results) but I'm in a rented house here and don't want to burn the walls or mark the paint with an iron (make the matte shiny, etc)

I will also find these peculiar stain erasers (sounds like a good investment).

You can get the wall erasers in B&Q - they are in a big green box and I think they are called Power Doktor.

Sainsburys used to do the Flash erasers, but I haven't seen them for a while.

These really really work. You need to be quite careful that you don't rub too hard though, as it lifts a thin layer of paint.

wd40

domeafavour · 02/11/2010 21:58

doesn't come off with a green scourer thingy?

Meglet · 02/11/2010 22:10

Yes, the JML / doktor power magic erasers should sort it out.

Don't know how they work (or what God-awful chemical is in them) but I no longer fear the childrens having crayons unsupervised.

I got mine from Robert Dyas but think wilkos stock them too.

anonymosity · 02/11/2010 22:59

I will try the green scourer, first Blush

Hair dryer. Melt it first and keep wiping/scraping/baby wiping.

jaffacakeaddict · 03/11/2010 10:59

Lakeland sell a magic eraser which is pretty good too - got DS1's artwork off the wall without any problems

NettieSnowBalls · 03/11/2010 11:06

wd40 brilliant on crayon. used it to get crayon off wooden floor and chalkboards

stigofthecastle · 04/11/2010 10:28

I saw Kim Woodburn on an american tv show the other day and she used hairspray as its sticky just took it off! HTH X

kitcat83 · 04/11/2010 10:47

white bread and hairspray gets any marks off our walls, give it a try it cant do any harm

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 05/11/2010 14:44

Toothpaste and a toothbrush. Scrub and the when it has gone just wipe with a damp cloth.

Works a treat for matte paint.

DD did this to my cream matte walls with black wax crayon about a week ago

HTH

white bread

waltonsmountain · 06/11/2010 02:38

Had wax crayon art all over matt walls and door recently. Tried everything to no avail. UNTIL our genius cleaner tried the old faithful BARKEEPERS FRIEND. Got rid of it completely in seconds. God I love that stuff ! (Available in all supermarkets if yr not familiar with it).

anonymosity · 13/11/2010 22:54

Hairspray is a fixer though, even in terms of art projects, pastels, crayons etc. I think it would make it more permanent.

The kitchen scrubber worked, thanks!
