I am trying very hard to keep to our strict budget of £90 a week, this is for the entire supermarket shop, food, cleaning products, and nappies, milk, etc etc.
I plan the meals, only buy what I need, hardly ever any treats, mostly own brands and it is tough. I am told by SIL that she spends £70. But I don't understand how. She goes to Waitrose! And buys those posh packets of smoothies, and organic babywipes, wine, etc etc. DH says if she can do it so can I. This is causing a lot of stress. We have a family of four. How much do you spend per week? Not in an ideal world, I mean really and honestly.

About 120 for 5 of us and 2 cats.

marge2 · 27/10/2010 12:30

Four of us. £100 a week ish over several trips. We do buy a fair amount of wine though!

wonderstuff · 27/10/2010 12:55

Lidl washing powder got a Good Housekeeping Institute recommendation. I'm totally disorganised, but menu planning is the one thing I do religiously makes such a difference to my budget and also stress levels, no oh no what are we going to have for dinner dash to co-op moments - just check my diary and get on with it.

bumpybecky · 27/10/2010 13:01

We aim to spend £400pcm (varies by £20 or so each month). That's for 6 people (dc 12, 10, 5 and 2), one dog, two cats, all toiletries and cleaning stuff and nappies for ds.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 27/10/2010 13:24

Up to £500 per month plus one takeaway per week and probably 2 meals out a month.

That is for 3 of us, me, DH, and DS (2.4).

It includes the odd bottle of wine or a new bottle of gin/vodka for the cabinet - but generally we buy alcohol separately.
Includes all cleaning stuff and some disposables although we use cloth 80% of the time, and some basic toiletries although most stuff I get from Boots so that is separate again.

gingercat12 · 27/10/2010 13:36

Our big weekly shop is around £70-90 depending on whether household and bathroom stuff or nappies need to be picked up. We probably spend another £10-20 (more like 10) on top-up shopping a week. Family of 3, only one in nappy.
We also have a meal plan with two fish meals and one pasta dish a week, the rest is meat. (The system is not set in stone though.) At weekends we often buy a big whole chicken, which lasts us three days.

gingercat12 · 27/10/2010 13:37

PS We do not buy wine very often.

EnSuiteShed · 27/10/2010 15:35

Depends on a week to week basis - some weeks it could be £50, some weeks it's £120. It depends on whether we need nappies, toilet rolls, kitchen rolls, washing powder etc.

sazlocks · 27/10/2010 15:43

Family of 4

£60 ish PW but that doesn't include nappies, wipes, alcohol, meat or any treats. I mainly buy fruit, veg, pulses, fish, dairy, bread and baking ingredients as well as general household stuff and toiletries.

sheeplikessleep · 27/10/2010 15:46

4 of us, 1 in nappies, 1 in pull ups at night.
About £100 a week all-in, everything.
Wish I could get it lower, I think food has gone up so much recently.

SummerRain · 27/10/2010 15:47

family of 5, i aim for 150 euros a week but can often be closer to 200. ireland is more expensive for thwe basics though Sad

DiggeryGravery · 27/10/2010 15:48

Get your dh to do the weekly shop.

MaMoTTaT · 27/10/2010 15:49

I spent around £65-75, 1 adult, 3 children, only need nappies for night time now, but includes tobacco Blush, other "treats" (crackers, philly to go on them, Dr Pepper, once in a while a bottle of wine etc) and top ups during the week.

ShowOfBloodyStumps · 27/10/2010 16:01

Me and dh, plus a 3.5yr old.

We shop weekly and dh is paid 4 weekly.

We spend:

Week 1: £80 ish
Week 2: £25 max
Week 3: £25 max
Week 4: £25 max

So an average of £38 a week. We stock up on essential and cleaning stuff, cat food etc in week one and then add to it with stuff in weeks 2-4.

pinkjello · 27/10/2010 16:13

About £150 for 5 of us with 2 still in night time pull ups. That includes 2 bottles of wine too. Trouble is I still end up topping up simply because I'm so bad at meal planning. I know I need to sort it out. My aim is to get down to £120pw all in without topping up.

I'm amazed and in awe that so many of you can do it for £70 and under. Blush

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 27/10/2010 16:17

£100 a week for two of us. £160ish a week when the kids are home from uni. That includes wine and beers.

hifi · 27/10/2010 16:18

at least 150 in tesco then about 80 in marks. dd1 goes thru about 30 of fruit.

Katisha · 27/10/2010 16:18

If this is really causing relationship difficulties then ask to see receipts.
Including ones from during the week as well.

We'd all be interested to see how she does it.

If she does.

tassisssss · 27/10/2010 16:23

OP, your SIL lies, I'm sure of it.

I've found by going to Aldi/Farmfoods on a Monday for boring stuff and tesco/sainsbury's on a Fri or Sat to top up with nice stuff for the weekend I can get our weekly shop under £100 and that's for 5 of us (and we have a lot visitors each week).

I can only sustain this by meal planning and batch cooking.

I also am amazed at how many of you can do it for less.

MaudOHara · 27/10/2010 16:32

SOH Shock how can you do it for so little - would really like to know what you buy to be able to spend an average of £38

womblesgirl · 27/10/2010 16:40

We are a family of 3 with DS (14mo) who is still in naooies and needs milk buying. We spend about £80-£100 pw. This also also includes fuel for the car and cleaning items, clothing, treats and any meals out.

However, we have just had to do a whole month on £200 due to us overspending last month quite considerably. It was tough but we did it.

I find Aldi was excllent with thier veg offers for 39p and the local green grocers and then buying the offer items at tesco and asda. Also if you go to the supermarkets at around 2pm they start their reductions on the fresh food, so we sometimes get a bargain with the meat etc and then freeze it when we get home. ALso batch cooking is also a fantastic way to stretch your weekly budget. Tinned toms are my secret weapon!!!!

Emjxxx · 27/10/2010 16:59

family of 5, all in including nappies and a top up through the week for milk and bread - £120pw

We shop at Sainsburys, we've done all the price comparison sites for the other super markets and for what we buy sainsburys is actually the cheapest by £5-8pw depending on offers. We buy as many own brand as possible but always buy fresh vegetables (not frozen, except peas!)We don't drink, so no alcohol.

no way she can do £70pw at waitrose all in, my mum shops at waitrose just for her and dad and she spends £70-80pw!!

TheFallenMadonna · 27/10/2010 17:05

I wouldn't be agonising over my shopping list in your situation. I'd be livid that DH was speaking to me like that. "If she can do it, so can I" - I really hope you're paraphrasing. I shop somewhat recklessly on Ocado I think, and probably spend about £100 - 110 a week. Family of 4. More when we have visitors.

Faaamily · 27/10/2010 17:07

Family of four - £300 a month

I tend to a £100-ish shop one week (which includes laundry stuff, household stuff, cupboard stuff etc), then a £50-ish shop the next (just fresh food)

GeorgeOsborne · 27/10/2010 17:20

Including EVERYTHING - all lunches, wine etc about £150 a week. 2 dc, incl wine, no nappies
