100% cotton lined tab top curtains
label says they have bonded material -whatever that it.

took them to dry cleaners yesterday and £35 to clean Shock
they are only Next ones and could probably replace for that price
so am going to get them back this am
shall I shove in bath or handwash in machine?

Yes I did. delicate wash.
you will lose the fire protection layer though.

TheChewyToffeeMum · 21/10/2010 09:04

Don't do it!

I did and they shrank to 6 inches too short.

brimfull · 21/10/2010 09:04

what temp did you wash at chewy?

I've done it at a low temp on a delicates wash and they were fine. Worth the risk if they really need cleaning

TheChewyToffeeMum · 21/10/2010 09:11

A cold hand wash cycle - the curtains were Ikea 100% cotton tab top. I risked it because they were filthy and probably cost less than the cleaning at the time.

brimfull · 21/10/2010 09:13

hmm think I'll risk it
hope cleaners are ok with me asking for them back

I have but they were unlined. I think the problem is that if they are lined one of the fabrics could shrink more than the other and even if it's a tiny amount they probably won't hang properly. But I'd go for it. Wash at 30 degrees on the handwash programme with very gentle spin and then hang outside to dry. Hang them to dry upside down with the hem part pegged to the line.
We have fabric cushion type thingys (technical Grin) as part of our headboard which are dry clean only. I did have them dry cleaned and one of the fasteners was damaged and they still looked dirty. Have washed them since - and even tumble dried them -and they look like new.

brimfull · 21/10/2010 09:26

the dry cleaner was inspecting them adn warning me that a few of the stains would prob not come out
they're white btw and haven't been cleaned since they went up 5 yrs ago Blush

I'm forever handwashing dry clean only stuff, usually makes no difference! I did however handwash a £130 dress after I wore it for the first time, and it was 'specialist' dry clean only, it shrank to half the size :(

brimfull · 21/10/2010 13:44

well they survived
washed at 30deg handwash , absolutely fine

and to think I was going to pay £32 to have them dry cleaned-doh!

I thought they'd be OK, washed as others suggested, but thank you for posting good result

I did mine, when the cat pissed on them. DP was getting all daft about having them dry-cleaned - until I handed them over to him so he could drop them off and he realised he really didn't want to spend any time in the car with such cat-pissy curtains.

Only thing I'd say (and obv. not applicable if you have tab tops) is to put the hooks back on before you iron them rather than after (obv. being careful not to melt them with the iron) as I managed to put some serious creases into the buggers faffing about with the hooks. But then they were still a tiny bit damp.

I am a shite housekeeper, mind [hgrin]
