How many bins, & what size, do you have in your house?

Inspired by the brabantia bin thread & that we're finally waving goodbye to the nappy bucket in the bathroom.

At the moment we only have a small bin under the sink, about carrier bag size & a food scraps bin on the counter. Will probably get a small lidded bin for the bathroom. Otherwise everything ends up in my pockets or on the landing window sill for when I next go downstairs.

Nothing wrong with our legs so no reason why we shouldn't walk to the bin every time something needs throwing away & don't want loads of bins that I (self-pitying) will have to empty, but wondered what other people have?

Kitchen bin (smallish, lidded)
Bokashi bin in utility area for food scraps
Lidded bin in DS's room for disposable nappies
Waste paper baskets in bathroom, our bedroom, living room and conservatory.

I hate not having enough bins!

BornToFolk · 19/10/2010 11:20

Oh, and I still think we need another kitchen bin for recyclables as these just pile up on the counter until someone takes them to the outside bin.

PestoEatsPumpkinsandSurfers · 19/10/2010 11:25

Brabantia in the kitchen plus a small one under the sink.

Recycling boxes X 4 outside.

2 wastepaper baskets in living room
plus a metal officey one in the study area.

Each of the bedrooms has a bin.

One of the bathrooms has a small bin.

Rubbish sack in utility area.

See, I knew you were interested really. Pesto, I crown you 'bin lover of the week'.

Dp seems incapable of using our kitchen bin (blames his arthritis) as it requires him to open a door, stoop slightly then close the door. Think he may be looking for excuses as when we had a pedal bin he claimed it made him lose his balance (has one leg slightly shorter than the other).

With all the recycling boxes, we don't seem to throw much away, just occasionally yucky stuff like yoghurt pots & nose tissues & broken toys/annoying bits of plastic that children get nowadays, guess I'm really looking for a magic bin that makes people use it!

we have a plastic double pedal one in the kitchen i.e. it has 2 compartments - one for rubbish and one for recycling (all our recycling goes in 1 big wheelie bin). There is a small wastepaper basket in the living room and dining room and the bathroom/shower room/downstairs toilet have a small plastic bin each. There are also bins in the 3 bedrooms.

Kitchen - brabantia!!! bin and food waste bin (under sink)
Bathroom - small bin
Bedrooms - bin each
Study - bin

Argh, having lots of bins is my pet hate! Drives me insane at my mums for example: woman living alone, has bin in every room, then its such a chore to empty bits from each one, which someone else often has to do as she cant bend!

We have... food scraps pot, and a carrier bag hanging on the door handle for other rubbish. Thats it. recycling goes straight out to the boxes by the back door.

lucyspangle · 19/10/2010 13:54

one large bin inside larder cupboard in kitchen.I take a carrier bag upstairs when I am cleaning- limit to one bin otherwise I would be forever emptying

KeithTalent · 19/10/2010 13:59

One bin, one recycling bag, one lidded bucket for composting kitchen scraps. All in kitchen.

Should probably get a small one for the bathroom, but as it is only 3 steps from the kitchen it seems unecessary atm.

Fiddledee · 19/10/2010 15:30

11 bins + recycling bins. DH likes to empty them Grin. We are on 3 floors though.

IrmaGhostSlayer · 19/10/2010 17:03

zero bins

PestoEatsPumpkinsandSurfers · 20/10/2010 10:02

Oh, I forgot, got an icecream tub in the kitchen aswell for composter stuff [hgrin]

Orissiah · 20/10/2010 19:36

I don't mind bins in rooms so long as they look nice, so we have:

  • 1 30L Brabantia in kitchen + recycling bin under sink (ugly so hidden away)
  • 1 small Brabantia in bathroom
  • 1 Muji bin in study
  • 1 Muji bin in main bedroom
  • 1 basket bin in living room
  • No bin in DD's room (yet!)
Takes 5 mins or less to empty all bins each week.
QuinionsRainbow · 20/10/2010 19:56

Flip-top bins in kitchen and bathroom.
Waste-paper basket in each bedroom.
Recycling boxes for plastic/cans and glass/paper outside the back door.

mrspear · 20/10/2010 19:58

We have one in every room! Small waste bins in the bedrooms, bathroom and living room plus large silver bin in kitchen

mrspear · 20/10/2010 19:59

Oh and i check that they are empty daily

TheEarthIsFlat · 20/10/2010 23:04

Thanks everyone. Interesting how it varies - wonder if that's down to recycling facilities or people working from home. Think if I had lots of bins I'd feel obliged to use them & would end up almost creating rubbish. Or would I declutter more? Hmmm. Mind you, I don't do enough exercise so going downstairs to throw something away makes me feel a bit less lazy, like parking a long way from the supermarket so I have to walk a bit further - sorry Dad (who is lazy Smile).
