Ive got one, I'm distinctly underwhelmed tbh. The cable is too short and all the plugging and unplugging is a nuisance. It probably cleans well but it feels a bit yukky not rinsing off the pad.

My one is a jml cheap impulse buy so there are probably better ones out there.

I watch these adverts entranced and glad someone has spotted what I noticed today, the cable is sooo short. It is like having a vaccuum cleaner that you can't move from one room to another without unplugging.

Now I do have one of those steam irons with a big water tank and can thoroughly recommend them, cuts down on your ironing time by at least 30 mins - no problem with 100% cotton, or jeans.

Ours is crap - lead too short as HalloweeseG says and also ours drips for ages while it warms up so the floor is soaked.

expatinscotland · 17/10/2010 17:15

They're pants. We ended up buying a Bissell carpet cleaner for small areas.

It doesn't clean deeply enough to remove stains, IME.

childrenofthecornsilk · 17/10/2010 17:18

Not a steam cleaner but Dr Beckman carpet cleaner is the business. I want a steam cleaner as well so will lurk.

We had an expensive one from lakeland. My dh liked it and he said the lead was as long as a vacuum. It lasted about 3 years but we can't afford to buy a new one now.

reup · 17/10/2010 17:22

We just used it in wood and laminate though.

Butterbur · 17/10/2010 17:29

I had an expensive one from Lakeland too. I loved it. I cleaned the kitchen floors, the toilets, and basins, and the bins with it. And the carpets when the DCs puked. It was easy to use, had a nice long flex, and it was nice to know everything was really clean.

Unfortunately it wasn't very durable, and when bits broke, steam escaped from the handle, and scalded me. Sad

childrenofthecornsilk · 17/10/2010 17:31

what was it called?

TheProvincialLady · 17/10/2010 17:37

We have a Vax one, a vacuum cleaner sized one not a hand held. The cable is very long and it does get rid of stains very efficiently IMO. I still spray a bit of carpet shampoo on first though, or it smells of wet dog. And we don't have a dog.

mamatomany · 17/10/2010 17:55

Oh no butterbur, that was sounding so hopeful :(

Just been out to the garage, where it's been languishing on its way to the dump. It's a Simac Vaporsimac PV20.

Definitely one to be avoided.

I have one that looks like one of those vacuums which pull along and I've just finished doing the kitchen. It says 'Steam Vac' on the side but I cannot find the maker.

They are excellent on laminate floor, tiles and shower doors. I'm wary about doing the windows.

I lent it to someone and it came back stinking of cat poop (they had not cleaned it out) so I put some Zoflora in the reservoir and hopefully that will flush out the smell.
