Electric Blankets?

I have no heating, at least for a couple more weeks and possibly longer. My house is cold. Is an electric blanket a bad idea? My dad had all sorts of terrible stories about them going up in flames in the middle of the night so I've never had one but surely they aren't that dangerous?

Is it more economical to have an electric blanket on over night or to have heating (if I ever get mine fixed) on for a few hours?

Have a look at this I think if you're sensible and buy a new one and get rid of it if it's damaged, it should be OK. Certainly cheaper to have an electric blanket on low all night than the heating. Having had a quick google, I reckon they'd use about a unit of electricity a night.

Thanks Daisy. I'm so cold, I may have to buy one in the morning. Brr

Have you seen you can get heated blankets to snuggle under on the sofa? I want one of those!

I LOVE electric blankets - can't live without them in winter. I remember my Granny's house went on fire when they left theirs on during the day (no real damage done) but I guess technology has moved on.... ours has dual temperature control so each side can be at a different temp - and you can even wash it. result.
However, have been considering one of these for this winter..www.funzee.co.uk/buy-now

Our house is cold (because we don't put the heating on very much!).

I've just bought a new electric blanket for DH and me. I put it on for half an hour before we go to bed and it's absolutely wonderful! The one we've got says that you can leave it on overnight on a low setting. I tried it once and nearly expired with the heat! I now turn it off as soon as I get into bed. It's heavenly getting into a warm bed.

Electric blankets are cheap to run (from what I read).

We had one a few years ago. It was lovely. We always put it of once we were in bed - it just didn't need to be on then.
Just use hot bottles now though, but the blanket was much nicer.

You've reminded me, I meant to get another one.
Top tip for keeping warm in cold house is always wear a hat; it does keep heat in body.
