Sorry this is a bit boring and mumsy, but it is getting to me.
There seems to be pressure to wash at 30 now, to save the planet and the polar bears. But I find it just doesn't get things properly clean. Especially towels etc. I am tempted to wash them at old fashioned 60. Is this evil? What does everyone else do?!

My washing machine goes mildewy if I don't do a 60 or 90 degree wash every now and then. It's not hazardous to health, but it is smelly, and apparently not good for machine.

Most machine manuals recommend a maitenance wash once a month.
Empty machine run on highest temp pref. using soap powder.

The biological bit of washing detergents are proteins called an enzyme. They are there to break down starches, protiens and fats in the clothing
Most enzymes have an temperature at which they work most efficiently which is why the manufactureres have temp mentioned on the packet
The enzymes in biological washing powder/liquids will surely be denatured at high temeratures and therefore not work

We use non-bio and do an empty/almost empty boil wash every fortnight or so.
