Mini sewing machines - any good?

Hi!

I have never used a sewing machine, but I think it's time to learn to use one, so I can make cushion covers, curtains and so on for my new home. I was thinking of buying a little mini sewing machine to start with, rather than spent a lot on a proper one and find out I'm absolutely hopeless with it.

What do you think? Can you recommend any particular brands? And how easy it is to use a sewing machine, by the way?

I have a mini sewing machine, but I wouldn't get one as a first machine, especially if you're planning on sewing upholstery fabrics.
I'd get a simple full sized machine, I've got an elna which has been very good to me.

I had one and it really wasn't worth the money and I only paid about £6 for it in the new year sale. Should have been £25.

I have a good basic John Lewis (made by janome) one which is really good

Go to a good department store, such as John Lewis and get them to demonstrate according to your requirements. Don't rush in and by the first cheap model, shop around.

The thing about a sewing machine is you really only ever buy one. So tbh I would advise putting the money towards a proper one. You dont need one with loads of stitch patterns just a basic machine would see most people through. I would also reccomend doing a course at night tech or somewhere. I did a soft furnishings one as I hadnt sewn since home economics in school. It really helped, I've now made curtains for most of my house as well as cushions and table runners, etc.
