So who'd recommend a steam generator iron?

Are they worth the extra money?

Are they compatible with normal ironing boards?

Are they a nightmare to store and fill up?

Will I start to smile when ironing?

Am I overthinking this whole thing?

Yes

I've got a Rowenta one and even though I usually can't iron for toffee it does seem to have made a difference in my ironing speed.

Anecdotal evidence from friends and colleagues suggests buying a low end one would be a false economy though.

Yes

Yes its fine with mine (I think they are all mesh now unless you get something out of the ordinary)

No

YES (who doesnt enjoy ironing?) Hmm

Totally.

Actually inasmuch as it is possible to like ironing, you will find yourself extraordinarily willing to iron duvets, sheets, pants, handkerchiefs, all the things you would normally have chucked straight in the cupboard as too heavy/finickity to do.

Agree with Fenouille. Dont buy a cheap one (less than £80 full price) its not worth it. I've got a Domotec full price £149 when new, bought for £99 in sale. Its brilliant. OTOH the Morphy Richards one I had before, full price about £70, was total crap and stopped steaming within about 8 months.

I love my iron best thing I ever did was get a steam one

BikeRunSki · 12/10/2010 21:15

We have a Philips one that cost about £100 and it is great. I still hate ironing, but it takes less time now and is a bit easier.

duckyfuzz · 12/10/2010 21:19

my mum loves hers, but she also loves ironing, weirdo!

SixtyFootDoll · 12/10/2010 21:27

My Mum gave me one, not sure how much she pais for it, but it means i can get away with ironing one side of most things.
IS quite bulky to store though

MaMoTTaT · 12/10/2010 21:32

YES YES YES

Yes - although I bought a bigger fancier ironing board when I bought my iron just so that it would look nicer sat on the end Blush

NOT AT ALL!!! 1 1/2 jugs of water sees me through around 1 1/2hrs of ironing (maybe more?) I rarely have to refill it at all. Just pour the water through the decent sized hole into the tank and it's done.

Possibly not - though as you'll get it done quicker then maybe?

Yes = go and buy one Grin

Agree though about lower end ones being falst economy. My first one was a "cheap" one. It died on me a year later Hmm. Managed to pick up a really nice on in the sale (1/2 price it was Grin) a year ago and it's much better
